Default How can I check that a cosworth is a cosworth

Its a 4x4 saph 1990. What makes it a cosworth apart from the engine ?

Are there any tell tale signs to look for that would say yup its 100% a cosworth shell

Any advice appreciated

Cut outs in front chassis legs for driveshafts, different gearbox tunnel for bigger box, chassis number, don't think you got a 4x4 sapphire that was not a cosworth.

Didn't ford standardise later shells anyway giving 2wd sierra shells the tunnel ears to clear the bigger box and cutouts in the front for the driveshafts

Late spec shells all had the driveshaft cut out and bigger tunnel no matter if it was 2wd or 4x4
There was plenty 4x4 saphs available from the factory
The 2.0 xr4x4 is the 1 where the 3.9:1 drop hears come from that are used in the cossy's
The cosworth shell was just a ghia shell so nothng realy to make it individual by being an original shell
Just have a good look around the vin number and see if its been tampered with

My 1991 Sapphire Ghia had a 7.5" Diff and beam from factory - i know other cars had 7" diffs but i guess the build date may differ

My cosworth 4x4 has reinforcements connecting the rear suspension turrets to the boot floor. The cosworth 4x4 is also supposed to have reinforced front wings compared to standard shells and also compared to the 2wd cosworth.

I've heard the stories about the later shells being 4x4 prepared, but I have never actually seen one although I did own a 1992 facelift sapph.

To me it would not be that important that it's a real cosworth shell on the papers. I'd rather have a mint reshelled cosworth than a rusty original cosworth shell.

Presumably the chassis number and engine number matching a logbook that says cosworth would be a starting point ?
