Default With ABS not working will brakes still operate ok?

On my 2wd Cosworth the ABS light has come on and the brakes lock up under heavy braking so the abs is def not functioning.
Will the brakes still work to the same efficiency?

I know the ABS is now inoperative (which isn't a problem) but will the brakes still work to the same effect as when the ABS was working?

Cheers Paul

Some cars the rear brakes lock up first which is bad.

You will still have full power assisted brakes if it's only the amber ABS light on. Rears are likely to lock up first as Steve said because they are over-braked on the rear (doesn't really matter with ABS as that sorts it). If you get the red brake warning light on then you won't have any assistance at all. The brakes will still work (providing you still have fluid in the system) but be prepared for some mighty pedal effort being needed to stop.

The rears def don't lock up first as I've tried it a few times.
I don't actually mind not having the abs working, my previous big power rst had the abs removed and I quite liked it like that tbh.

It's just the amber abs light on. All fluids etc are good

I ran mine for years without abs (light on) and prefered it. After a while I fitted an aftermarket rev counter to my clocks and used the abs light to power the light in the rev counter

ABS light on is supposed to be an MOT fail.

But it would be crazy for such a condition to leave the car with unsafe braking...so they will be just fine.

Thanks for the replies guys, I do prefer it without the abs not functional so I may leave it like that for now...
