Default What's the best small car?

Hi guys

Currently looking for something to replace the wife's i20 and not too sure really what to go for.

Criteria is 50+mpg, 5 doors, boot big enough for a small push chair and a bit of shopping, air con, etc. Style and looks is unimportant but reliability is. Have up to 6k to spend and want something no older than 6 or 7 years old and no bigger than a focus. It will go on the motorway 3 or 4 times a week and will do about 15k a year so needs a little bit of poke.

Been looking at a diesel mk7 fiesta and a skoda fabia but apart from that are a bit stuck! No more hyundais please as they are utter shite

Thanks an advance!

Don't get a Peugeot. I hate my Mrs 207 with a passion, poorly built, naff interior, crap dealers. Sooner we trade it in the better.

Fiesta or Polo for me.

There's always good dealers around on Corsas though. Not exactly the coolest car ever, but you seem to get a lot for your money with Vauxhalls. Admittedly it might not be the pokiest thing ever, but you might get one that's only a couple of years old.

I was going to suggest the newer model A class merc after mine for the build quality, reliability and surprising amount of space but after looking at the stats I wont. they don't seem to have any of the poke your looking for ! a 2010 A200 diesel is about £5K but takes about 9.5 seconds to 60 !

Thanks for the replies guys! I have discounted anything French already, I also had an astra a few years ago and that was turd, so it's really put me off vauxhall. A Toyota is a good shout, friend of mine has a 2.2 diesel auris that's been remapped, goes like shit off a shovel lol.

I've had a look at these a class's, they look alright but there is so few about. Not sure what what happen when the Mrs twats it in to something or breaks it, bet it would be expensive to fix!

Bloody fiestas are so expensive too, for a well specced fabia, I can just about get a base model ka!

We've got a fiesta zetec s ecoboost, nice solid cars for small engine. Only get about 43 mpg but the misses isn't the most economical drive, on 26 k and never missed a beat so reliability not a issue. Some good pre reg deals out there now.

Slightly less common...maybe a Honda Jazz ?

Hondas are usually half decent. Maybe even stretch to a civic, the 1.7 cdti Isuzu engine's are great

How about a newer Mazda 3 diesel they do a wide variety of engines on them and are great cars. If you can pick up a sort at that money it has all the toys in it.

My little A2 daily hack fills most of your criteria apart from a bit too old? Reliability wise they're ace - I've done 26,000 miles in 14 months and it's not skipped a beat. 250k+ miles isn't unheard of - owners joke that they're about "run in" at 100k.

60+ mpg day in, day out, £30 p.a. VED and feels much bigger and civilized inside than it ought to and very well engineered / built. Pretty nippy from the Tdi too.

Anyway, you'll probably hate them but thought I'd mention..

I'm a big fan of the fiesta, my mate uses his for work and jams so much stuff in it you'd think it was a van at times. Nice to drive, not ugly and reliable enough

Thanks for all the replies guys, look like a fiesta is definitely the favourite and something we will look at first. The 1.6tdci is supposed to be a rubbish engine but the revised 1.4 is much better so will probably look at one of them.

Plenty of others to think about too, she likes the mazda 2 but not many of them about!

Tony, if you wanted cheap tax you should have just bought a smart car! Joking aside we are actually thinking about getting one to kick about town in.

Shame to hear you are disappointed with the golf, they were my favourite car for years but I think I just hold a candle for the mk2 and in reality the mk3 and 4s I had were ok at best.

I'm currently running a 2010 (59 plate) 1.4TSi Sport SEAT Leon Mk2.

1.4 Turbo petrol 125bhp engine. 6 speed manual gearbox.
I regularly see between 37 - 42 mpg on the daily commute to work & back.
I've had 50+ mpg on a motorway run.

I've had it now for 4 years. I traded in my mk1 Focus for it.

The Leon has never let me down, all I've had to pay for is its annual service/MOT & VED.

They cone with lots of equipment as standard.....your basically getting a VW Golf in (arguably) a prettier body.

If you want to try something different that you may not have considered before.....go & try one out. You'll be pleasantly surprised.

Just something to consider

at only 15k a year, a diesel really wont be saving much, and if it goes wrong, it will cost a lot.

I've got a 2015 Nissan note acenta, awesome little car, does 50mpg with stop start technology and easily cruises at 85 on the motorway, has cruise control, air con and sat nav. The doors open up fully wide so easier to get kiddys in and we have pushchair in the boot, also the whole back bench seat slides back and forward for more boot space

Working at VW the older polo's are crap i'd just get a fezzy. Corsas are absolute wank drove a year old one on Friday and it gave me chronic back ache after 10ft.

Petrol is the future killed enough golf diesels in my time but my current gti is taking the abuse well and returning 41mpg.

Skoda will be a good cheap car even if it is about as much fun as eating a cabbage. Best bargain basement car in my eyes and from previous experience is an A4 cheap to buy, run, insure, good on juice and the boot is massive plus a decent amount of cred plus always a good return come swap time.

Get a loan and buy a mk3 focus ST.

Just back from a weekend at the lakes, saw 35.3mpg on the way up, fair bit of traffic and lots for roadworks tho.
On the way back today it was 33 but from birmngham i was dong 100ish where possible as i needed a piss.

Usually tho its around 25-28.

You can get them in estates too, like mine
