so you calculate the compression ratio and remove the required metal from the centre leaving a 35thou(ish) clearance to the squish area , now lowering compression ratio and keeping the combustion in the centre of the chamber , controling flame fronts and increasing mixture within the chamber!

It's a hemispherical head on an RS Turbo so there is no specific squish area and as such flat top pistons are correct for this application.
