I asked this question quite a while ago and it spawned this thread: https://passionford.com/forum/genera...you-using.html

Yes interesting i had come across this while doing research, however useful as it is.. what i need to know is how to distinguish any box that i'm offered and know before i buy that it is what its supposed to be.. as sellers realise that unless you split the box you won't know the diff ratio or gear set looking at an oily breaker yard box and they will mark it up with the car its from, engine size which may not even be correct.. is there a code stamped on the casing a part number that Ford can work from to tell the innards. i don't have the time, money or the space to have 4 or 5 boxes in various states of dismemberment laying around until i get what i need..

I understand your feelings there for sure. I don't know if they all have particular codes. I think the gear ratios would generally be the same for each engine type, but some models have different final drives.
If the breaker has the reg/VIN of the car, this site will tell you the final drive: https://www.etis.ford.com/vehicleReg...5C3A5.fcvas501
Still not a guarantee but may be some help.
