Deteriorating performance Focus II 07 tdci1.8
Good day, I think I have a problem with the performance of the engine on a Focus tdci 1.8 manufactured in 2007.
Background:- Faulty injector was detected and replaced; the engine started working erratically and lost power; the mpg went down from 46 to 39mpg. Ended up changing all 4 injectors. No coding of the injectors was required (although there was conflicting information on the internet)... and the 'no coding required' was confirmed after running engine diagnostic checks. There was the self learning and after 400-500miles I could feel the engine noise improve.
However, after replacing the injectors with brand new ones (Siemens €800 ) I noticed that the engine power declined and when needing to overtake it is takes longer to rev up when previously this was never an issue.
For the record, i checked the Turbo hoses (it was replaced 2yrs ago), and also replaced the full clutch kit including the flywheel. (the clutch kit was replaced after having experienced the decline in engine power).
After that the problem with engine power still persists in my opinion unless I am expecting much from the engine. I like my Focus and would love to get the performance back to how I knew it once. Any help or suggestions that you can share will be greatly received. Thanks

Is there any fault codes, is the engine like on. You could try taking the egr valve motor off and see if the egr valve is stuck. Its only a 4 torx bolts,2 small torx bolts on a bracket and the electric plug to take off.
Well thats if its the same as a transit connect van lol.

Hi RichieST, Glenn and vroooom ptssssh, thanks for taking the time to share your views which suggest EGR.
I will check the part and will keep you posted.
Yesterday evening I spent some time staring at the engine and tried to unscrew a metal plate which protects the fuel filter and guess what??!! I could not unscrew the bolts...hence the question is how the heck did the mechanic manage to change the fuel filter. I will be visiting the garage this week and have the mechanic remove the metal protecting plate from the fuel filter; and whilst at it will also ask for the EGR to be checked.... if my suspicion materialises (i.e fuel filter was not changed) I may end up looking for a different mechanic. I will let you know.
Thanks a million for your time and wish you all a happy Sunday

Hi all,
So, I have an update with regards to my original post.
Here are some tasks which took place:
The fuel filter was replaced (it was brownish/black after just 2 years since last replaced...if it was replaced at all).
The ERG was checked and it appeared clean as new; however it was still cleaned with some spray.
A friend of mine suggested that there is another filter in the fuel tank however it is not accessible from under the back seat, so I'm afraid that I have to pull out the fuel tank. (although I am not 100% whether there is actually any filter in the tank)......anyways..... we attached the fuel pipe (the one that feeds into the fuel filter) to an air compressor and sent some compressed air towards the fuel tank.
Took the car for a drive and noticed some good improvements, driving up a 45degree hill the car clocked 100km/h and in relatively a few seconds on a straight road the speed went up to 130km/h and had to apply the brakes. The funny smell of the fuel seems to have disappeared / reduced substantially.
So it appears that any one or a combination of the work (mentioned above) done to the engine seems to have worked.
Thanks for the tips and guidance that was given by Ford Enthusiasts on this post.
Best Regards and happy driving
