You talking about xenon bulbs or an after market hid kit? If the kit there not suited to the Sierra headlights as they are made for normal bulbs. So the glass and reflector are wrong meaning your not get a proper beam patten. So your just dazzle everyone and fail your mot

indeed glenn as projector style lights point a straight beam handle the light spray as you know, but in older style lamp casings the light escapes left right and centre and is bloody dangerous to other road users

Don't is the short answer. Like most old cars the Cossie headlamp is of the "reflector" type which lacks the light control and cutoff of a "projector" type unit.

Sometimes it will work, you can buy h7r lamps for reflector headlights to stop the scatter, the R is for reflector, they may make one for the h4's, my mk2 Mondeo had a clean beam line with HID's fitted and my now mk3 Mondeo is also fine with aftermarket HID's, my mate 220gsi was terrible though, it was like shining a light through a crystal ball, it went fucking everywhere was quick to take them out too as people showed there displeasure haha!
Some good halogen lamps will make a noticeable difference if the ones you currently have are old.

The Cossie headlights are even worse to put HID conversion kits into that the more modern reflector headlights, as the the glass "lens" of the headlight has the beam diffuser lines on it. The reflector inside is just a smooth chrome bowl, the lines formed into the glass lens are what dissipate/diffuse the light out in direction, giving you your beam pattern. Naturally, these were designed for tungstun-halogen bulbs, that 55w versions typically kick out around ~800 lumens (at around 3000k/3200k on the Kelvin chart). Your 35w HID kit, at say 4300-5000, will kick out 3000 lumens (anything below or above this kelvin rating will begin to lose lumens output), which are far too powerful for the lined glass diffuser. As said, you'll simply blind everything coming towards you with massive glare.
They're better in modern headlights that have smooth glass or plastic outer "lenses" (that really aren't lenses, they're just the outside cover), as the reflector bowls do most of the work as sending out the light in the correct beam pattern. For example, my headlights have ridged reflector bowls to scatter the light up, down and out. HID kits work better in these, but will still scatter too erratically, due to the design of the reflector, and glare/dazzle oncoming traffic. In the end, I retro fitted a pair of projectors into my headlights, and now enjoy dazzle an glare free front end lighting, and the benefit on the road is exponentially better than reflectors, as 100% of the light output is focused on the road in front of you, rather than 50+% being lost out to atmosphere as it's scattering the wrong way.

This guy polished the lines from the inside of the standard glass and fitted projector lamps.

I bought 100 watt bulbs for mine when they were still readily available, about 21 years ago but I dont think you can get them any more. They do make a big difference and my car has passed every MOT for the last 21 years with no reference to them.
