The focus has a chain drive from crank to pump, but the older stuff was belt drive so i dont realy see it being doable without a whole lot of fabrication, and you'd need to use the injectors off the older stuff as well to match break pressures etc,
So not worth the hassle

Im sure when ive changed a few in the past ive just swapped the module over on the top of the pump. Im sure u had to re solder the wires. This was about 3 to 4 years ago now.

It is why I got rid of my MK1 Focus TDDI.
I thought it too risky to suffer a very expensive failure. You can take a punt on swapping the EDC on top of the pump at about half the cost of a pump but there are no guarantees.
A real shame with that particular pump who's reliability issues also plague VW/Audi's and Vauxhauls fitted with it as it does a good job when it is working.
If I were to go for a Ford 1.8d, I'd go for the previous generation as fitted to the MK1/2 Mondeo and Escorts, a relatively simple mechanical pump. The engines aren't quite as torquey or as good on fuel but are reliable.

Which part of the fuel pump goes on the pumps? I know that on the Mondeo TDCIs simply using a good quality fuel like VPower and sticking with either Ford's own fuel filter or carefully picking one aftermarket (Only Delphi and Bosch (they sell two kinds to confuse matters and you can guess which one they sell more of due to cost ; it is marked E for 'economy' apparently!) are said to be any good). The aftermarket filters even from Mann and sometimes Bosch for the aforementioned reasons do not filter stuff out which eventually leads to all of the problems and basically writing off the car (swarf goes through the entire fuel system from generally the fuel pump failing and then clogging the injectors, going back to the tank to repeat the process; On a number of TDCI a non start issue can generally be fixed by changing the fuel filter ; they can block up that easily!
I only know of 2 Mondeo TDCI Mk3s which have done close to 200k without fuel pump issues ; one of them has not even changed an injector either and is on 180k! The other guy has admitedly changed 2, but both adhered to the above (one actively endorsed it!) and the rest at similar mileages seem to have had a fortune thrown at time (fuel pump, injectors and so on).
Back on topic, the TD pump probably will not work anyway since the TD pump is designed for cars with indirect injection. The TDDIs are Direct Injection cars.
Glenn, that is surprising. I thought GM/Vauxhall robbed their diesels from Fiat which seem to be pretty decent relatively speaking before they went to 16 valves.
