Default Painting over / alternatives to anodising???

I've got some adjustable top mounts that are currently anodised gold but I want them red, is there any reason I can't paint them?
I assume it's so that the thickness of paint doesn't cause problems ?
But assuming it doesn't is it just so there's no friction in the moving parts? Or as it won't get damaged through use?

The reason I'm asking is I've just been quoted £70 to redo them in red which seems crazy to me and if that's the case I will leave them gold lol.
But if I can spray them red I will do them myself lol.
What prep would I have to do?

Prep no different than anything else really and yes you can paint them.

or you could get the anodised stripped off and have them re-done red
