Default How many miles left when fuel light comes on TDCI Mondeo MK3

I have a 2002 mondeo tdci which doesn't have a fuel trip computer on it. I'm a student and can't afford to brim the tank on it so i always run it on fumes, literally. My old escort diesels fuel light used to come on when the fuel gauge needle hit the "E" white dash. On this Mondeo it varies sometimes... the fuel light will come on at 15% and other times it will come on when it hits 0% on the gauge. I've heard i have 50 miles left when it does so? Don't start moaning that it knackers my fuel pump up and injectors because it probably does, but £60 worth of diesel is 70% of my weekly wage. Also don't start moaning that a Mondeo isn't an ideal car for a uni student, it's what I've got and it does the job: For example - illegally taxiing students on Friday and Saturday nights, hauling alcohol around city centers and it's big enough to have a comfortable nights sleep in with a girl next to you.

You're a student with not a lot of cash and you bought a mondeo diesel... When the fuel light comes on, on a ford you're on borrowed time. Personally I wouldn't run a car that low especially a diesel because of sludge and dirt that can accumulate at the bottom of the tank. Mondeo diesels are renowned for their frail fuel system and that's when things get very expensive.

Just put the fuel in, you have to anyway so there's no point risking an embarrasing breakdown or expensive repair.

When you're sat on the roadside waiting for recovery the extra £10 of fuel suddenly looks like a shrewd investment

it depends how you drive...it will come on with a set amount of fuel left (if it works), how many miles you can squeeze out of it is up to you

You'll get the fuel tank rusting from the inside out if its always empty too, so apart from pumping all the sludge through the pump and fuel system you're on borrowed time with that too.

don't worry, youll get al least several 100 more miles.....id look at your charging system for these illegal student and alchohol runs if your not making enough cash to refuel then your doing it all wrong.

It's 50 miles left when the light comes on. It works it out on how you've driven over the last 400 miles. That's on all Ford's with a fuel light.

It's all worked out on fuel quantity, if you look at the output from the fuel level sensor, the light will always come on with the exact same quantity of fuel left.

The light on my Focus ST used to come on with about 30 miles remaining on the trip computer, whereas my diesel Mondeo comes on with about 80 - 90 miles remaining. I have driven it for about 10 miles on an indicated range of 0 miles, I would be happy to drive it like miss daisy for 100 miles after the light has come on.

As well as the alcohol runs start shifting some cocaine and pills, you will be able to afford some more fuel.

dear lord just sacrifice the expense just once and fill it right up, then just keep it full instead of running around empty, I really don't understand the mentality of it, ive been proper skint myself in my younger life but keeping it full costs no more than running around empty its madness imo !

I thought students were supposed to be intelligent - the future of our country eh?

One week, have a couple of pints less and put it in the tank. Then put your usual £4.52 in 5p's in before the light comes on. You haven't lost anything, except the prospect of looking like a complete cunt sat by the side of the road with no fuel.

Running low keeps weight down and adds 50 ponies.....
If it comes on put some juice in, i have had a bad experience with the wifes bora and ran out at the pump, took ages to start afterwards lol!
That had taught me not to take the wifes car without checking fuel gauge and driving down motorway.
Diesels are so sensitive to crap in fuel, the lower in the tank it gets worse.

That's a bit of a myth really, the pickup is always sucking from the bottom of the tank, it doesn't keep sucking from the top of the fuel until it reaches a load of crap at the bottom of the tank.
