Default Clio 172 cam belt, what's the limit?

Seen one locally and it's pretty cheap. It's got 90k on it, but the owner doesn't know if the belt has been done.

Obviously it's a pain on these, so I was wondering how long they last? If it's 20k over the limit, would it have shat itself by now? If I see it I might find a receipt for it, but I was just wondering if there was a decent chance that it would have been done if it's still going.

Seems worth a punt at the price so any advice would be useful!

after 99 they are 72,000 miles or 5 years and they are known to fail so its up to you if you take the risk

to be honest its a guessing game, if it fail tomorrow or it could last another 10k, a friend had a cdti vectra that had done 160k, he hadnt change the belt because he was told it was a chain! it was due at 100k

if the car is cheap enough and you can do the belt yourself, then go for it

There's no limit as such it's just a recommendation, that the risk save the cash on doing it and keep your fingers crossed lol

Putting £450-500 into an £800 car isn't that appealing. Wouldn't do it myself, apparently it's a pain in the arse on these, and I don't really have the time or motivation to spend time doing it.

I'll see what it's like anyway. Like I say, it might have been done, people rarely seem to know what's been done to their car!

As long as you don't mine it becoming a £250 car when (if) the belts snaps and scraps the engine

I have a full fat 182, cracking wee car fun to drive I'm using it to commute to manchester and back due to my diesel barge failing it's mot I get around mid to high 30s mpg
Only down side to mine is the stupid aftermarket exhaust is too loud.
Long as you know the risk and your willing to accept it if it all goes wrong then go for it
