Default Fuel pump drawing 16 volts?!

Today driving the cos home.

On idle the fuel pump starts buzzing hard and as I have my volt meter wired to it was spiking at around 16v?

It's part of a -6 aeroquip system.

Fuel cell -> lift pump facet -> swirl pot 1.5litre -> 044 -> sytec filter -> rail -> regulator -> return to swirl pot

Any ideas?

Pump is 2 years old done maybe 1000 miles max

Cheers Billy

From what I've read online, seems like the pump may be on its way out?

Is that volts gauge picking up voltage from entire charging system? If so the regulator on alternator could have gone? Have u checked charge voltage at the battery? If 16v at battery then I'd say alternator regulator

I dont see how a pump can draw 16V (faulty or not) from a 12V battery unless something else is wrong

I expect the regulator on alternator gone and it's over charging the system

a working voltage regulator is set to around 14.4 volts so the battery and cars electrics don`t get cooked as above alternator regulator faulty

16V I am surprised it hasn't cooked the battery! I had an old rover where I had to run the lights the fans and everything to try and keep the voltage at 14.4 or it boiled the battery lol

You can't 'draw' voltage. You draw current.
Voltage is best described as 'pressure'.
I'd say you have an alternator issue myself.

A pump cannot draw 16v unless something in the system is providing it with 16v.

ie check your alternator.

And overcharging can cook other parts too, like the battery. Has it been smelling bad or leaking acid lately ?

The pump itself will be perfectly happy and safe at 16v though
