How much have you spent to keep car on the road?
Just wondered how much people have spent on their cars to keep them going? I'm curious as I'm spending 950 (Including a service, cambelt and water pump change) on a car I paid 850 for. It's a lot and wondered if anyone else has done similiar (to make myself feel better, obviously)

Id hate to work it out exactly.
Bought my Mondeo for £5,900.
Done 50k in it.
I've put 12 tyres on it at £125 a tyre. £1500.
There was the fuel pump timing belt, Cambell and aux belt. £700.
The modifications came to £1000.
10x oil changes at £45 a pop. £450.
Plus 5 full services costing an extra £500.
£4150 already!

i hope your saying that you got a bargain at £850, if that cars worth say 2k, then spending that cash isnt a problem, and i assume the car is mint everywhere else?
if youve spend £1800 on a car thats worth £1k your nuts, should have punted it on, either complete or breaking it and just bought a good one to start with.
what car is it?

It's a ST170. The condition is pretty good everywhere else but I'd be pushing it to get 1800 for it. Maybe 1500-1600, although should be fine for me to run it for a year or two.

No point being the richest man in the graveyard! I spend my spare money on my car as some have already stated it's a hobby however if u can't afford a classic car and it's upkeep don't buy 1, they will all end up costing money at some point weather it's bodywork, engine etc

I've found that life I needed.. It's HERE!!
The cossies are my biggest spends to keep on the road but it's not a daily drive its a hobby and we all need something after a crap week at work so I don't count on them, just don't tell my girlfriend.
My defender 110 I paid £2500 for and was a basket case and my daily drive, still is but owes me 10k plus in the last year, it's awesome though

Happily retired
I do know what it all costs but thats a secret squirrell .
Have had 400, 500, 620, 680, 760 & 840 M.A.D engine conversions in the last 16 years. What i will say is the lastest 1000bhp engine in development has cost 23k in new parts to try & get that extra 160bhp & still more bits to buy.
My only advice is build your life before your car. I was 53 when i ordered that fatefull 400 conversion from Mark dont be so silly unless you are finacially secure in the house you aspire towards & your kids education is behind you.
I get rather worried when i see young lads on here wasteing there lifes chances on an old Ford, this is a one shot life make your decisions wisely.

i think i put around £16k by the end of my last xr2 over a period of 7 years, 2 years just sitting around.
if i could have gone back i wouldn't have put the last 10k in for sure and just bought something nice to start with, but once i started i didn't see the end till i'd got there.
only regret is breaking it really, but i ended up with a better daily to be fair.

You don't want my job mate I don't want my job lol
After 8 years of gaft managed to get myself in the office (hopefully permanently)
That 80k is over a 10 year period and wouldn't have been anything like that figure if I knew then what I know now.
But I do love my old 3 Door

My 2wd Saff only cost me £3000 but have spent £10,000 in the last ten years.
But its been my daily driver (summer months) and its probably done a thousand miles round Brands Hatch too.
Just in the middle of its second engine build up to about £3000 and not finished yet
Long studded 200 block, wrc oil squirters ,Cosworth pistons, all new valves and guides,
Mahle motorsport bearings the list goes on.
Its done 160,000 miles now so can't conplain
You can't beat a good cossie on full song
You don't want some moden fwd piece of junk
Cheers Tim.

i've always done alright out of cars, my cossie was very reliable and i didnt chuck that much money at it. Now im older im certainly alot wiser. Became a dad last september so my daughter is my priority now, next year we want a bigger house so saving for that too.
still got an e30 318is BMW & a 1972 MG BGT amoungst a few other cars. The classics are always increasing in value but will sell them next year to help with the house fund

If I don't include oil and general servicing I've spent around £110k on just buying bits for my cars as of the start of this year since 1993
The current Mondeo cost me oil and filters and the full works major service around £400 when I first bought it, £126 on a fuel pump, £120 on plus and leads, a few words on a coil pack and one other thing I can't remember in the past 8 years
Then there's about £10k I've spent just on shit I wanted

I've found that life I needed.. It's HERE!!
Its alright saving for a house and all that sensible stuff but other aspects of life have a habbit of screwing you over, lost 2 houses to women and several cossies have had to go as a result, if i waited until perfectly settled i dont think cars would exist anymore.
Im renting now saving for a mortgage but a cossie came up cheap locally and now its mine, never thought id have the chance to buy another the way my life has gone

Not a lot for me to be honest apart from tyres & tax. Feel a bit ripped off last time I bought tyres. I wanted them to fix the tracking as well, paid £92 all in & the tracking's still out
