As far as I understand it it's not so much the size of the tunnel but the mounting points for the gearbox cross member.

My 1.6 3 door certainly seems like it has a big enough tunnel, but don't take my word for it, I'm sure someone who can speak from experience will be along sooner or later.

T5 box has fitted fine into my 1.6 3 door shell, just had to drill holes in the floor and drop bolts through sitting on 4mm strengthening plates as the tunnel/floor is only thin skinned and doesn't have the extra mounting point on the underside that a Cosworth does have, you'll then need washers/spacers to line the gearbox engine and prop shaft up, something that I'm still yet to do as the propshaft sits at quite an angle ATM, however the Cosworth propshaft mounted into the same points on the 1.6 shell just fine didn't need any mods there, can upload some pics for you later if you like?

Been out jacked the car up and got some pics for you, looks as though I need to put some big washers in between the gearbox and gearbox mount to solve the angle my gearbox engine and prop shaft is sitting at here's some pics

And you'll need a hole punch to fit your Cosworth loom as the base model doesn't have this hole

Main the only custom parts I needed were a hole punch for the loom to go through and the 2 metal brackets for the gearbox mount which don't show with the carpet fitted on top

My Sierra is a 1984 1.6l L 4 speed originally and one of the first off the production line

Hope this helps mate

on my B reg 1.6 i had to mod the standard gearbox mount and cross memeber. from memory i had to rotate the alloy bracket 180 degrees to fit the T5. edit: the cosworths have a slider thing fitted where the gearbox cross member mounts

might be pics if you click my sig. i cant remember.

Yea there's an extra piece in the gearbox tunnel on Cosworth shells for the mounting point which spaces the bracket out more, the saph Cosworth 2wd alloy bracket won't fit properly in any mk1 Sierra shell neither will the 4x4 Sierra bracket nor the escos one i had them all at one time for comparison of best fit each one is different dispite how similar they look, the 3 door Cosworth bracket is fitted to other sierras and some capris with type 9 boxes

You do need to sort out that propshaft angle - I did this to my 4x4 donut in less than 3000 miles.

Default Spacers

The Cosworth well my three door has spacers that are fitted bêtween the propshaft donnut carrier and the shell. They are rectangular and are around 12mm thick, should sort out your propshaft angle.

My Best.

Tim.

The car is going into grove garage as soon as I get a new radiator here and fitted, the car isn't being driven yet as it's almost a finished project so will go in for all the tweets it needs and an mot that way I've had a good set of second eyes go all over everything I've done from a bare shell up, will be trying to align that myself before I send it in

I'm pretty sure I used the 1.6 gearbox cross member with the T5 alloy bracket turned 180 degrees when I did it.

I did not drill any new holes, just mixed and matched standard parts...

Thats what i done, but think i had to cut a bit out the cross member for clearance.
