Bad smell of fuel inside car

Recently bought a mk1 focus with a 2.0 blacktop zetec, all standard.
Since we bought it there was a minor whiff of petrol occasionally and the plan was a good check over this weekend.
Anyway, weds the engine management light came on and the smell of petrol was getting worse. Although the car still started and drove without fault although the mpg was very low.
Had the car on the ramps today and no leaks were evident at all, occasionally a whiff from the pump area but nothing too bad.
Had a friend plug in his computer and 3 faults came up, one being that the cats blocked and the other being the O2 sensor suggesting the car is running rich, down to the cat I believe?
Question is, is a decat the easiest way to fix? And coming home now the smell is even worse, as if there was a massive leak of fuel but could this be the unburnt fumes the cat can't deal with?
Any help would be much appreciated.
Thanks
