Default Anyone owned a E91 320d BMW?

Has anyone ever owned a 320d m sport touring (2006)? Ive got my eye on one as a stop gap over for the next few months. The S5 has gone and fancy getting something a bit more economical / cheaper to run. i imagine its not going to be the most powerful thing but how are they, and are remaps available?

Cheers

I wouldnt let it put you off mate, a lot of this type of stuff is over-exaggerated on the net. I was in the same situation with the S5 i've just sold and the supposed common carbon buildup issue. Car was absolutely spot on!

Agree with Chris, yes, it is an issue but the amount that go wrong compared the amount on the road and you're talking very, very low odds of getting a problem.

dad has an 09 320d m-sport.

its an auto so only seeing mid 40's mpg and i dont think they have had any issues with it.
i was looking at a 57 plate touring last month, the boot is not that big on them but they are a nice place to be. comfy etc.
they go well enough, but if you want fast get the 330d and have that remapped

the std 320d m-sport is 167bhp

And Chris, they are good cars and generally very reliable/good buys. Engine is great except the timing chain issue, but they give good warning before they go with a loud noise. Poor fuel economy can be an issue, usually down to EGR thermostat, sometimes engine thermostat or glow plugs. Clutch judder can be an issue, the cars are fitted with a clutch delay valve that fails. Anti-roll bar mounts and rear shock mounts wear.

They came with run-flat tyres as standard, but these give a harsh ride, particularly on the 18-inch wheels (as you know form your 335i!).

Great cheers, I have my eye on a modified one so no run flats (indeed the 19" runflats on my 335 were bloody horrible!)!! I've been advised an ecotune remap on a 320d will give me around 230hp (not sure on torque), of course still not as quick as the S5 but i'm after something cheap to run for a bit! (before I lose my licence!)

A 2006 model will be the 163hp/251lb ft version, so most remaps will increase that to 193hp and 301lb ft. Even the Ecotune one won't see over 200hp but it's plenty to have fun with.

Beware though, my remapped 320d pulls well but chucks out so much black smoke when you boot it that it's genuinely embarrassing, so I don't floor it anymore

smoke on boost is a poor map or a fault somewhere.
i've only test driven and read up on the 320d's, nice place to be and failures are rare with timing chains. remap is worth it, not going to see 230bhp unless plenty of other stuff is changed.

I've got a 2008 E91 320d. Regarding the timing chain problems, it only cost me Ł6000 at the BMW dealer here in Norway for replacement engine. I complained about noise while it was under warranty, but apparently there was nothing wrong with it... Being my first car with a timing chain I thought ok, I suppose the chains do make some noise. Great fun stuck on the motorway with no compression in the morning.

Vibrating adaptive headlights, faulty LEDs in 3rd brake light, corroded rails on the roof, mirror glasses going brown, leaking shock absorbers, leaking gearbox, defect turbo, defect ECU, rusty doors and boot are some of the problems I've had in 3 years.
Yes, great cars...

I've got a 2006 320 d m sport touring ,
I've owned it 12 months ,it had done 94 k when I bought it , on 101k now

List of. Repairs so far Turbo replaced 3k ago ! Common problem around 100k
Glow plugs
All four wheels cracked (had them welded )
Egr thermostat
Rear tyres wear badly inside edge ( just put new on )

This lot sounds bad! But if it's all been done ,then no problems !

I regularly travell 250 miles to my caravan and back ,with 3people and 2 dogs ,fully loaded as well . The mpg is around 50 on a run and 40 around town

Apart from above ,I really like my car ! It's very usefull ,comfortable and looks very good for estate car

Just unlucky for me I found out about the above

Turbos fail due to bmws 20k service intervals ( way to long )

I have done 2 oil changes so far ,but will be changing oil every 10 k in future

This is all reassuring....
I'll be looking at a couple this week in touring guise. Failure rates are low apparently, so won't be putting me off.

Not seen it yet but my mate has today bought a 535d touring. Remapped and bigger intercooler. No idea on power but he said you put your foot down and there is no lag, it just accelerates and just keeps on accelerating lol.
He picks it up next weekend

535d's are no slouch circa 280bhp, remapped and we're talking M3 (e46 bhp) and enough torque to slow the world from spinning!
i did look at a 335d today amongst others, alas only a coupe, must say it was quite nice.

Bought it, very happy, nippier than I thought it would be tbh but will till get it remapped! Stereo is bloody dire though, that is coming out asap! Few bits already done, coilovers, X5 alloys (10x19's on rear with no rubbing, bottoming out etc, M3 rep front bumper, light tints, ipod thingy inside etc...!

Couple of pics although it does need a clean!!

Fairplay, that looks bloody terrible. I hope you bought it like that and you didn't lower it and put those alloys on yourself?

Needs to come up 20mm and have tyres that fit properly!

I do like an E90 though.

I like BMW's. My Father's F30 320d is an absolute hoot to drive!

But when it comes to modifiying I like the whole subtle and OEM+ route.

Fit some standard BMW badges, a rear wiper, remove the front window tints, put some standard indicators on it, bring the suspension up 20mm and fit some tyres 10mm wider and it would be perfect!

You sure it hasn't been remapped already?

Seen that on E90post a couple of weeks ago, the alloys were the giveaway.
I kinda like the wheels on it, loving the concave on the rears.
Decent spec if I remember correctly.

that's a bit marmite TBH, like the first choice of wrap, wheels and height looks....erm....
you like it and that's all that matters.
how slow is it in reality, i find my remapped bora as quick on the straights as my 330ci e46, upto about 100mph anyways, and that's only a 165-170bhp diesel (unless i launch the 330 hard)
i'd reckon on a front mount cooler and remap and it should get plenty more, i recall Stu from MSD getting 250bhp (he thought that was a bit ott, so settled on 230bhp realistic) from his 320d e46, so must be plenty of scope in the later models.

I like the wheels, rears especially and ride height.
But this badges are awful. At least change them to black/white. I'm just about to order them for my car, will cost Ł20 for boot, bonnet and wheels.

The first wrap colour looks very nice.
Not keen on the 2nd tho.

Definitely agree on the badges. the rear one looks like its been pressed in somehow but looks like its meant to be like that, weird! They are black/white so may put them back to original colours.

I'm preferring the second colour at the moment, matt colours seem to have been overdone recently! Relatively easy car to wrap so can always change after if I dont like it

cheers! I was expecting to be thrown about in it but to be perfectly honest if you were driving it you would think it is on normal suspension, surprisingly pleasant, no weird knocks bangs bottoming out etc, no rubbing even fully loaded with crap in the back. The previous owner did say that it was all done to a high standard with all new bushes, coilovers, top mounts etc, not just slammed on cut springs! I even get full lock without rubbing!!

I meant these badges http://bit.ly/184xxAe

I'm thinking of getting those or real carbon fibre ones but don't know if they look cheap?
