Default I need to polish my knob..

The gear knob in my Puma is a right state, some pretty nasty marks in it! Have any of you polished up a metal knob? What did you use? Is it worth putting it on the lathe with some really fine paper?

I was searching for the thread size of the Puma knobs once and came across a Puma forum where they were discussing this. Worth a quick search.
