Hi every one I have a great Escort van, I have done lots to her. I have had her now for one year the only thing that has drove me nuts all years has been.. Every time it rains I have been getting this dole thump, thump knock from her back end. Now as it was always and only when it was raining that I got it I never got around to checking it out. I have all years put it down to the brake compensation vallve on the back axcel. Well today I backed her into the garage and checked it out. I was surprised to find it was the leaf spring on back drivers side. I at once sprayed some oil inbetween the two spring hopping this would stop it. Well to my surprise it made it worse. I then got a mate to jump up and down on the back door, I then found out it was not the springs banging together but that as they came apart the water or now the oil I had put on them was makeing a sucking noise as the springs came apart.
Well I put two small bit of thin alloy plate in between the two spring ends and bent them around the springs. thank god the noise now stopped.
Well I was wondering has any one else has had this problem and do they have a more perminant way to solve it. Cheers all Pete Out. Thanks in advance

Yes I have the same problem. Thought it was a knocking shocker at first so replaced the pair. As the springs get older and contact each other over thousands of bumps they become perfectly matched to each other so when the water gets in and they separate they sort of "suck" apart, creating the noise. I'd like to know what other people have done to rectify this.

Still I will see how long the bits of alloy last, I will carry a couple of bits spear so if they wear I can replace them in no time.
