Default Interference or non interference engine?

Hi guys,
Does anybody know if a mk1 focus, petrol engine, 1.6 zetec se is a interference or non interference engine. I changed an oil seal in the crank shaft and the engine is now out of time(not synchronized any more) and im afraid i damaged any valve. i just tried to start it on and i heard a blast.

Most engines are interference. The focus definately is. If you haven't got the proper timing pins I wouldn't attempt one as neither the crank or cams are keyed.

No,there is no safety relay. Best you can do is time it up properly and see if it runs.

Take the plugs out, turn the crank bolt over by hand and see if the engine turns freely.

Its hit then. Take the cam cover off and see if you can see anyrhing. You need the timing pins though.

yeah i know, but mine has only 60 k miles on. lets hope i dint make any damage. Pretty old mercedes days. Never had a problem with timing belts as it had a big thick steel chain!!! in this engine the crank shaft and the rotor were hold only by a single bolt.

The belts are fine if you know what your doing! Good for 10 years or 125000 miles between changes

But if it runs ok, do you think it will have any non evident problem that can come out some miles after?

No. If it runs properly I can't see there being a problem. But I think you will have damaged something if you tried starting it.

engine starter turns the engine so likely to have damaged it.

The engine is f....d. 12 banded valves and damaged block valve. piston head damaged.
Thinking of rebuilding the engine and sell it. Any idea of the 1.8 mk2 are they any good. My father owns a mk 2.5 pertol engine and it runs great. thanks.
