Default Can a Car Garage MOT The Vehicles It Is Selling

Hi,

Just wondering is it allowed for a Garage to MOT their own cars they are selling?

Can find any info about it at all. I would have personally though that you can't due to a personal interest. But, from what I have learned over the last few weeks about car dealers, they can do what they want when selling cars. and it's up to the buyer if they can, to prove the seller is in the wrong which is nigh on impossible as we have found out.

I take it you or someone you know is having a disagreement with a garage?

I bought my car from a large main dealer and it should have failed the MOT so I told them that I was considering appealing the MOT ! The reaction was something to behold.

we sell on average 10-15 cars per week at our place. every car is serviced and mot'd in house. if they need anything they get it. this way we ensure that the cars are as good as they can be when they leave us. we do,on occasion sell some of our cheaper p/x's that have some mot left on,but we do still mot them as they are all sold with full mot, regardless of age/price etc. if they are uneconomical for us to repair and sell, they get sent to auction.

No point in trying to police it really, as if it were to become illegal to MOT your own vehicles, then all two garages would do was MOT each others cars. Plus, how many garages would put the vehicle in their name anyway, so the MOT would be untraceable via the logbook of previous recorded keepers anyway.

Bottom line is, that if someone wants a dodgy MOT on a car then it is way too easy to do so.

There was an article in the mot magazine a few months ago saying that they are goin to bring in a rule where you can't mot you own vehicles and family/ friends vehicles, fuck knows how there going to do it but it was there in black and white print, all tester will have had the magazine as its only test stations that receive it, it's called matters of testing or something like that!

Theres no reason why you shouldn't test your own vehicle. If you follow the correct procedures and to the same standards then the result will be no different.

I have failed my own cars before.

Seems like its open to abuse.

Isn't there a rule about places like Royal Mail etc. not being able to MOT vehicles in-house?
thought i remember hearing something about that.

if you own the only garage in a remote part of the country your not going to drive 30 miles to get an MOT if you can do it yourself, if you MOT your own car youd want it to be safe surely

Thats why its open to abuse, there are a few dodgy testers out there, but at the same time, some of the test makes no sense, but rules are rules.
If you don't report it then that's another one that got away with it.
