Default test drove the new nissan qashqai today...

i know its a nissan, but blimey its impressive! been looking about for a new motor for the missus as the hyundai terracan we have, while being as strong as a tank and reliable, is too big for her needs really. i bought it as an over protective father i guess, figuring the bigger the safer!

so we test drove the latest model today, top of the range with all the crazy gizmos and gadgets, cameras for every type of parking, sat nav, DAB, you can adjust the suspension for cornering lol, it even reads the road and tells you if you start drifting into another lane. traction control, 4x4, leather interior, stop start tech, the works.

drove really nice too, we were sold on it and when they offered us 4k for the terracan (i wanted 4.5k) we were all ready to sign on the dotted line, when i ask the missus what colour she wants it. So sales guy brings a chart out, she selects a blue, and the chap says ok that ones an extra £525!! WHAT? says I, we have to pay extra on paint? "that one you do" says he, so i ask him what colours we can have that we dont have to pay for, theres only one colour thats free, POSTBOX RED!

i got the hump then and said we had to be somewhere else, and to have a word with his guvnor as tbh asking us to pay another 500 quid for fucking paint on top of nearly 28k for a bloody nissan was taking the piss!

anybody else got or driven one of these yet? and do you think im being tight over 500 quid? (if you do then you agree with my missus)

All manufacturers charge extra for metallic..I certainly wouldn't be paying 28k for a qashqui!

the reasons we looked at it are the engine size is 1.6 so insurance will be dirt cheap with all its safety features etc, it does something stupid like 80 MPG and becaise of its excellent emissions etc its TAX FREE! we are shelling out 300+ a year on the hyundais tax

These start at £12.5k for a 13 reg one on autotrader.

You must be fucking mental to be considering £28k

And funnily enough, I wouldn't pay 500 quid for a colour either.

I just don't get the whole it's cheap/free tax thing. Most cars like this are big depreciators and it's swings and roundabouts.

Surely when spending twenty eight thousand pounds (sounds worse like that lol) you'd need a hell of a lot of tax free years to offset the huge depreciation. After three years you'll lose about £18k. I'd want it to run on air and dispense £50 notes out the ashtray.

I guess it's none of my business but I just can't get my head around why someone would waste so much on a mundane car. You could buy a 3yr old one for £10k and lose a lot less when you're bored. Fair enough buying new if it's something special, rare or you're loaded but it makes no sense on something mundane like that.

If i was the OP, i would be holding off until april/may to see whats going go happen regarding taxation etc. He might find he will pay £28k for his tax free Nissan, and come april/ may when the "use of the tax disc" and the lay out of the taxation changes, he will get shafted. There is a new tax year coming up and alot of stuff is going to get re-evaluated. You can garuantee that!!

What's wrong with it to be that cheap? Doesn't sound right when the majority in that price range are 3 years old.

Metallic is always extra, in fact Henry Fords saying of "you can have it in any colour you like as long as its black" also commanded an extra premium of £300 back in the 80's!!!!

Like anything else on a new car the list price is to get you in through the door plus the way they make a profit us of course on all the extras.

£28k for a quashquai is a lot, why not go on the sick and get one for free?
The choice car for the motability brigade hence the fact their practically worthless used.
Shame as they are a good car that's built in Britain.

Currently 10 of them under one year old, and the highest mileage is 14k.

If this works:

28K on a car that depreciates that much, OP must have cash to burn!

Had one as a hire car once and was
Proper horrible to drive. On par with Astras.

Could only get 210 miles out
Of a tank of fuel as well.

Whos paying for it? if she wants to spunk £28k of her money (not your money claimed as hers ) then so be it and when she looses loads you can say "i told you so".

Women do not take an "I told you so". Somehow it will get twisted round and it will be your fault she lost a packet on it.

Like my ex not pumping up the car tyre when I told her to (I would have done it but my lift to site was waiting for me). She gets back at night telling me it's pulling. Did she pump it up? Nope. Then it was my fault I had to spend £100 on a new tyre.

The thick bints need to realise they wont "keep going" if they dont inflate the tyres, check the oil and water and get them serviced when needed. Bet many say thats "mans work" yet still are "pro equality" lol.

Equality means you change your own flat tyre, bitch!

In all fairness I think my Missus is one of a kind.
I've never seen her wear makeup, knows how to look after her car, shouts at me when I go over my oil change interval by 10 miles and when I was having trouble getting her input shaft to line up with the clutch she told me to "man the fuck up", pushed me out the way and got the box on in 5 mins.

On a more serious note... I to would struggle to spend £28k on a Nissan that would be worth nothing in next to no time at all!
Could always look at a 2-3year old X1/X3 that would still be worth the majority of what you paid for it in a few years?

I really don't understand the logic of expensive cars, that are cheap on tax and fuel.
Complete false economy

I recently considered one (family car) but the price is just way too high for what you get. Also the depreciation is a bit chunky. Still not decided what to get yet and the new kid arrives in 4 weeks :O

Fuck me!! Almost get a GTR for that cash! Will be more fun too!

My mum and dad just got one of these and to be fair its a nice car but never worth more 18k new i would say. 1.6 petrol and she never goes over 60 sees her at about 45-50 mpg.

I had a brand new 60 plate +2 model. I went for the diesel and it was dog shit slow and came NOWHERE near to the claimed mpg. So don't expect your 80!

Weirdly they are called 'Dualis' here in Australia. I never liked the Qashqai name or knew how to spell it. I don't even know if that is right

Contract hire one on a two year deal for around £250 a month no big outlay, only way to do a brand new car IMO unless you are going to keep it forever and ride out the depreciation.

Why in God's name would you pay 250 a month to effectively rent a car? There's just no financial sense to it.

Because that's almost exactly the same as it would cost you to own if over the same period of time

And no 28k to lay out, basically all you are paying for is the 2 yrs depreciation. I always used to buy brand new cars the last one cost me 40k, the first year depreciation on that car was 10k I could have contract hired it for 7k for that year. With interest rates as low as they are it's a no brainier.

I see where you're coming from but, IMHO, you need rocks in your head to buy brand new. Saved a huge lump buying my Mrs her 207 at 1 year old and the former owner has taken the brunt of the depreciation.
