Default what engine is this

going by the side of the exhaust and inlet i'm thinking Zetec or I4 (RS2000/galaxy/scorpio) but can't find the same design rocker cover on anything ford, inlet says I4 16v, but i can't put my finger on it.

I'd be more inclined to say I4 as well - but the rocker cover doesn't have the angled slope up to the top. Doesn't look like a Zetec, though.

It's neither. It's a Mazda engine that came with some Ford Probes abroad. Can't find a picture of one with the Ford cam cover but found the Mazda version.

EDIT:
A Ford one in another Mk1 Escort with a small turbo...

i guess that means its a good engine then, better than a ford, should be running the mazda pick up 5 speed then as well.

well done, I knew it wasn't ford because the i4 and zetec doesn't have a water take off at the front of the engine, and an i4 engine is chain driven.

I guess they rotated that inlet manifold around ?? Also added a custom crank trigger wheel

The i4 is a timing chain engine, and that's clearly a belt driven engine,
Manifolds are the wrong way round to be a zetec
So as above is the Mazda engine also fitted to late model 2.0 mavericks

The turbo on that mk1 looks quite naughty,
Never seen these engines tuned, if that turbo's normal for them ,then that could be fun

exhaust passenger side is correct for zetec (and duratec badged zetecs), I4, crossflow and it would appear the probe's mazda/ford engine, exhaust driver side for duratec, and pinto
