cosworth or Evo?

Reason being is quality standard parts are hard to find let alone a complete standard car plus the fact a standard car is what it is and a modified car is a un known , I would rather buy a standard car than a modded one .I have done bits to mine but kept every part thats come off it to hopefully retain better value

I agree a 2wd is worth more due to the fact theres less good ones about and they are more fun to die in
Yes but there now at classic status so there worth more not monkey'd about with

Pete I see Kevin put that up and I know why so what does that make yours worth, Kevins worth? Even mine which has never see a welder. And a s for trying to insure these types of cars within the club imo is a joke, As the powers that be like Totally std over modified versions yet there valuations are miles apart! Std cars being worth more yet if they both were a total loss the modified car will cost more to replace

So just to clarify:
Mint std brakes = peanuts
AP 4pots and 330 rotors £1500
Std refurbed wheels £300
Comps= £1000
T3 turbo= £400
T34=£800
4x4 cooler £50
500 type £300 upwards
My mate has tried to find MINT non etched glass for years with no luck which is std to both modded and std cars.
So imo a standard car is a car that has its original panels and colour with original engine numbers and correct type of interior. all other parts are interchangeable and fairly easy to get.

In all fairness i need a few things doing on mine but that's because I'm anal.
Roof lining is a must, few little bits of paint i want doing too, mine isn't on original paint, I'm just being honest, no point fibbing and i hate folks that do
What mine is though is a straight , clean, rot free low milage car.
I will get the jobs mentioned done over time, i just like driving so much at the moment

Are you after some thing that's gonna be worth some thing in a few years or just a daily car that's gonna get used in all weather that's gonna get abused?If I was gonna batter a car a lot on the roads and I had the choice between the Evo and Cossie id choose the Evo if it was just about owning a Cossie and getting it out every now and then and a cruise up and down the road and a few shows id choose the Cossie.

As someone else said, an Impreza is a good option. Buy one of the more unusual ones like a Type R or RA and it could well gain some value, and would be a very handy road car. Just don't try running silly power and it should be fairly reliable too.

BUT if you mess with a standard bumper it becomes modified and not worth as much? Jay

No it becomes restored lol

Unless you're prepared to pay a disproportionate top dollar, any 20+ year old car is going to be a running project. So that £5k is just the start no matter what you buy.
Especially if it's a performance car that is going to be used as it deserves to be!
And I say Cossie

not for eveyday commuting, it will be a 3rd car and i dont mind it being a bit of a project. im put off cossies because of the amount of tat out there at silly prices like most things pre 92 these days but i have found a fair few out there under my £5k that seem decent enough. yes i would like it to hold or accumulate in value ideally. imprezas are crap had 2 and due to most being around £2k have fallen into dickheads hands and now knackered plus insurance is stupid. other options im tempted by are celica gt4 but always seemed a bit bland, pulsar gtir. m3 did cross my radar but never been a bmw person and i like audi s4 but 90% have done over 140k miles and i dont like the idea of the fuel economy

The OP hasnt clarified his description of "weekend toy"
Is it a toy to "play with" or a toy as in an "ornament"??
There is no point giving strong coin for a cossie if its gonna have the shite cut out of it!! I bought my saff for sub £5k and although there is alot cleaner out there, its mechanically rich with "goodies". So if i bend the car and break it, im not losing out. Give strong money for a saff and bend it, how do you claw the majority of your cash back??
To answer the OPs question, go for an EVO. Alot more reliable and better value for money. Literally 2 weeks after i bought my car, i was offered a seriously cheap FQ320 Evo 8 and was only cheap as the guy needed the cash asap!! And it was cheaper than my cossie

i would buy the e46 m3 on here for 5k i personally dont like imprezas either but have a rb5 and its quite good just feel the budget is too low for them as my mates have had evo 4s and spent a fortune buying evo 5/6 drivetrain parts for them and wish they paid the extra in the long run theres a damaged repaired evo 7 for 5k on gumtree highlands im sure

ive found plenty about for under my budget both evo 4/5/6 and cossies so really dont know why everyone thinks there more, you can get a evo 7 for 6k these days. granted time of year helps.
as to the definition of toy, something i can use. wont get used very often but its use will just be fun. if in time i can spend money on it to up its value thats great but not looking for an orniment

in my opinion i would say save for 2 or 3 months more, obviously depending on your circunstances.... simple reason is ive just my evo 7 (very nice jdm rs2 in french blue) and i have to say awesome car, i used this every day for the last year and never missed a beat, on the other hand, a cossie can be just as good and reliabe, only thing is to get a good usable 1of each car id say will cost around 7k.... all depends on peference, however if u only got 5k i wouldnt entertain or be very carefull what u buy as will prob be a dog, failing that there are many other good cars out there for 5k
