Default Audi A4 avant 2.0 tdi 170 bhp, good cars?

Merry xmas all!! Well almost.

So things always change and i need a estate car. Been looking at audi a4's.

Seem good fuel, half decent speed and looks good but are they any good?

ITs a 2.0 tdi 170 bhp I've been looking at and with a remap see me to about 200 bhp. Anyone got one or done this? I know they have problems with the dpf but been told a remap could sort this or removing it (from the inside so the new mot thing will be fine).

Been to look at one thats done 100k but had a cam belt and water pump done at about 85k.

Anything i should i know?

Cheers.

The 170 engine is more problematic than the 140. I had a 140 Passat as a company car for a while and loved it. Well until I lent it to one of my surveyors who promptly wrote it off.

I've not heard of any common rail 170 problems, the engine is conpletely identical to the 140 apart from turbo.

What year are you looking at? 2008 onwards should be common rail, road tax should be an indication too, Ł140 a year I believe.

Engine code will be cbab cbac or cbaa, but it will be on a badge on the engine or in the bay.

Its a 07 but the 08 facelift ones seem out of my range.

Wanted a 170bhp as it will see 200bhp and the 140 won't.

This is the one i am going to see

Cheers for the replies.

Nice enough, but they seem to be very expensive I think. I found you could buy a Passat, which is basically the same underneath, for less. Though I was looking at S-Lines, SEs are probably cheaper.

if your going to buy a A4 , 2.0 tdi get one thats after 2007 (56/07 +) as the engines before this did suffer from oil pump shaft failier

the problem was sorted in 2007

I bought a A4 S-line Gun metal gray tdi great cars so smooth effortless to drive

Just not to keen on the 320d, dont like the back

Really like these audis Thing is i can't get a newer one due to cash.

Also really liked the s-line in these.

I keep looking out for problems but can only find the injectors that go wrong but i believe Audi replace these once they go wrong... Should still be replacing them i hope lol.

I had one the same, just in Akoya Silver, about five years ago. Awesome car over 60mpg, better than the equivalent 3 series at the time (used to run them at work) I'd definitely have one again. On,y issue I ever had was a squeaky EGR valve.

Personally as much as I love ford ,I would stay away from the mk4 mondeo to much problems with mainly injectors

I could have bought a 09 plate tdci titanium 87k fsh. For the same money I paid for the Audi

I know I'm getting old now ....... I'd rather drive the Audi than the Cossy. The Cossy to rugged feel every thing on the road

The Audi is quite smooth easy to drive it's just effortless

You get good cars and bad cars matey.

Our friends over the road had a mk1 focus. They never had a problem with it. They sold it and bought a Audi A6 and a 08 vw caddy van. He has had nothing but bother with them both. The Audi has had engine problems and faulty electrics on the rear lighys and the VW van has had problems with the engine too. The engine was filling up with diesel. The head was corroded around the injectors. It cost him 1500 quid to fix it.

The wifes step dad had a 59 reg 1.8 diesel mondeo mk4 and the only problem he had with that was the fuel filter got blocked up and the car had no power. Replace filter and it was spot on again.

Not all Mondeos are shit. My ST220 has done 140k and barely had a spanner on it outside service items. 2.0 TDCI ones can be problematic, but I think the 2.2 is a lot better. Most diesels seem to have issues, no matter who makes them. The high fuel pressures and complex emissions control systems all lend themselves to going wrong sadly.

I know a couple of people with 2.0 TDI VAGs and they don't report outstanding MPG, but both have been reliable. One is an 07 140 Passat, the other a 13 170 Leon. Another friend has a 56 320d that he bought with 100k on, and he's put another 60k on it without any engine troubles, and it's more economical than the VAGs. It, arguably, isn't the best looking, but if it's just a daily, who cares, function over form and all that.

Saying that though, I've just bought a V70 D5 lol

i've got the 170 bhp engine in my Passat CC and it's really good - does no less than 50 mpg unless you drive like an utter cunt and regularly 60+ on the motorway on cruise control.

There was a tranny van at my work that had 250.000 miles on it. To look at the engine and box you could never tell. It was just the rusty body that gave it away.

Think i may go for it as the audi site seems a lot of help too on this and a remap can sort a lot of things out.

Also i know of a sierra thats hit about 450k-500k now and has a different cloud on every panel lol

i had the 140 quattro hybrid turbo, uprated clutch, solid flywheel angel tuning custom map,ind kit,215bhp great car no dpf on that. it was 2006 model sold it for a 2.0 tfsi with only 30k big mistake only 350 miles to a tank .got a mate who has the 170 and it was shit on fuel 30-34 mpg tops heard there worse when new and get better with age ,in comparison wife has 1.9 jtdm alfa 147 chipped, airfilter ,exhaust 185bhp 600+ miles to a tank so all in all the audis are good but not the most frugal on fuel
