Default Celica gone wrong again!!!!

Coming back from work in it, was giving it sum stick in 4th, then it coughed a bit n loss of turbo . Feels like te turbo has fell out of car. No boost no wind no dump valve, n engine sounds bit rough when revving it , boost pipes seem fine n she idles on n drives ok but without turbo power, no smoke or no lights on in dash

It's got top mount cooler,
No boost pipes or any pipes popped off or split,
Actuater I'm unsure off,
After running for a while it developed a slight tap noise coming from the cam belt side, but that stopped after I revved her,
Exhaust fumes smell funny, not like burn feul, strange smell,
The incar boost gauge shows she builds up half way between - and + on the standard gauge!

The car drives spot on still just no turbo, it's as if someone cut the turbo off! Just nothing there

Hmmm, sure I saw a thread the other week where these were described as a ball ache to work on!!

It has to be either a huge boost leak with a split pipe or intercooler (and if so you may well see a massive cloud of fuel smoke out of the back) or something to do with the actuator or if you're really unlucky turbo shaft might have snapped.

Was the car used a lot since you bought it as if not then you may well have snapped the turbine shaft as the exhaust side might have seized up

Did thrash the arsenal off it to the redline in 1st, 2nd,3rd,4th n then it went ......

There is oil coming out of my air filter , but this filter had an elbow were the breather pipes join to it also other than just the turbo.

Sounds to me like the actuator rod has come off.

The fact that it runs and drives ok apart from the lack of boost doesn't suggest there is a leak in the intake system as I'm pretty sure on these they have an air flow meter so probably wouldn't run right if there was.

Based on the very vague description, it could be anything from a boost pipe, actuator, blown turbo right through to blown engine.

And oil in the air filter is rarely a good sign.

Engine runs spot on,
No leaks or split pipes,
Pressure tested the system and all pipes are good,

Narrowed it down to actuater or exhaust turbine,

Gone remove mani and turbo this evening and have a troubleshoot!

Turbos on them arent renowned for their reliability......and whoever designed the brackets to bolt the turbo to the engine....needs sliced into small pieces bit by bit.

You'll be best running a GT28.. and get it mapped properly to keep the car below 1.2bar of boost; since the standard internals, particularly the rings, don't like anything too boosty.

Cheers,
Grant

Owning one and working on one is very different. Owning is easy, and I would never own one. If the turbo and cat have never been touched, their removal is a complete nightmare. So hope someone has been in there before and left a lot of bolts out. And don't think the factory ecu can easily be remapped ?

I have had a Renault laguna do this.

my cousins car, the turbo was shot the shaft had twisted in the housings and impeller catching comp housing due to wear and simply wouldn't turn anymore so I fitted a new shaft and bearings/seals for him.
im not saying its the cause but it sure is a possibility.

The ST205's use some silly ceramic turbine'd turbo. Great in theory, but they are very fragile.

Just had the top mount off, 3/4 of hear sheilds around turbo, fck me the japs must have small hands,
It's so tight, no room for a fag paper,

Couldn't get to the actuater rod, but felt it n the slip pin is still in and the rod a isn't snapped!

Managed to get some long nose on the rod and I can just get it pulled out enough to here the gate open n close,,,,,,,
Slight play left to right were the rod goes into actuater is this normal?

No play in turbo shaft up or down( in or out !

I'm clueless, does anyone no any specialises to take her too around Essex area???

Cossie Sean????

No need for a front mount, standard charge cooler is fine up to c400bhp... fitting a GT28 with an exhaust, flexi, downpipe, intake, pump, injectors and an aftermarket ECU with pro mapping should see you with a genuine 350bhp and an attractive graph.

That was certainly true a couple years or so ago when I was on the owners club, doubt it will have changed but you never know I guess.

Ok after self diagnosis and reading up online I have found that the engine is displaying error code 54-

Error code 54- chargecooler level sensor.

If this sensor is broke the engine goes Into limp mode and retards the timing and cuts off the boost.
( hopefully it's just a case of replacing this)

As I turn the key u can hear under the cam cover a noise indicating the timin is being offset!
(Strange)
