Default Is 100k really that important now?

For years and years that 100k mark has had a mass effect on the sales of vehicles but with new technology and cars being built so much better is 100k no longer a problem?

I am currently looking at purchasing something like a Disco 3, 7 seater and loads of them are knocking up the 100k mark!

Your thoughts?

Sold a few cars with 160,000 miles on them, and a old rover years ago that had done 300k, not a problem for modern cars as long as they looked after

I wouldn't want a JB Fletch 100kr Lee

On a serious note, on i don't think it is tbh as long has it's serviced correctly etc etc, probably better than some of these 15-20 k milers that just get used occasionally

100k would put me off a cheap car but if I was spending 4k plus id want lower miles.

Depends on the car, the age and the history IMO

Too hard to generalise

Ie a 4 year old 3 series with 100k motorway miles and full history would be fine, but a privately owned 7 year old focus st with patchy history then bollocks to that.

You get the idea

My dad has a e46 320d that has just hit 280k Its going in for its first clutch next week

100k is small these days, we have a few 1.7cdti combo vans all 150k+ apart from a couple of alternators they have been good too!

100k, depends on the engine and car.
100k on a diesel not that old is motorway miles cruising, not an issue at all, even 150k wouldn't concern me too much.
150k on an m3 would stop me in my tracks, even question 100k on one, dependant on condition though.

I have always bought on condition over mileage, but mileage has counted when thinking of the future sale of the car! It just seems a little old hat now, the 100k! We were using 100k as a rule of thumb on 60s and 70s cars! You would think 200k would be more realistic now!

100k is nothing to the engines nowadays ,however on our roads its a long tired life for suspension and bushes etc making a less quality car (dare i say ford or vauxhall) feel old and start costing money bmw's etc seem to age a bit better

have had cars with low miles be nothing but trouble and some with 100k plus no issues at all, as the others have mentioned it all comes down to if looked after or not

My dad recently sold his old Laguna with 230k on it and it was still going strong! He fancied a newer model tho.

No, I don't think 100k is an issue now really Lee.

With the old cars by 100k both the engines and body would be showing signs of wear, but they're so much better made now. The only issue I have now is that when they do go wrong they are ridiculously expensive to fix and half the time need a main dealer rather than you being able to repair them yourself. That's progress for you.

Get a big socket set if your gonna do the work on one yourself...
Big jack etc...
Most jobs on these are a c*** to do, ie front lower arms, front wheel bearings...

Make sure you do your homework on one before you buy...
My old chaps got a 05 plate, paid Ł14k for it a couple of years ago...
We made sure it had belts done before we handed any cash over...

In his ownership so far, it's had front wheel bearings plus new bolts, front arms plus bolts, general service items, 4 tires ŁŁŁ!!!
Rear drop links, rear pads, parking sensor loom, height sensor...
Doing all the jobs ourselves has still cost Ł2-Ł3k easy...
There not cheap to work on, his is a tdv6s and its a thirsty thing...
Every job I've done on it I've had to fight it, nothing comes undone...

A later disco 3 will cost more to tax and then you'll get stung on London congestion charge if your ever down that way...
Lovely car but you'll need deep pockets to maintain it to a high standard IMO...

Looks well for the money, just look into the common faults and make sure everything's done before you buy...
You don't wanna be hit with Ł1000 bills straight off, otherwise you'll wish you never bought one...
Take your time buying one and get the right one...

My old chap has always wanted one, a few years back my uncle passed away and my parents were given alittle money... Without that they would of never of dreamed of owning owt like it...
They spent what they had on buying the best one possible without really looking into running costs...
2 years on I think there quite surprised on its running costs!!!

They love it though...

Mileage wouldnt bother me on most things. When we used to have a garage and car sale pitch some of them had done that in 12 months Its strange as some cars ie under 20,000 or older with 40,000 can be problematic but star shipers can be trouble free.I think the highest my mum had was a old 740 volvo with 220,00 and it was sweet as a nut.My last car was a lwb shogun 122,000 pulled like a train and mechanicaly sound. The body let it down though.I remember buying an old Jetta one family owned and about 40k.Everything broke !! starter, alt, head gasket exhaust.Short journeys and standing about are now good imo.

big heavy cars these and 100k can prove to have taken it's toll on them. hard to work on and expensive. depends what life it's had really. bolts are always seized and shear! electronics are their weak spot but that can be from a week old so the mileage doesn't affect that really. check the chassis. as that age they were made of thin metal and a lot of them are looking rough.

We used to have transit at work with 250.000 miles on it. The engine was sweat as a nut.

I dont believe that Zafira has that mileage on it.

The car when it come into us was on its way back to Scotland. The guy who was driving it sad it gets used by a few people going up and down the country for work.

There would also be no point in someone adding miles to it either for when it reaches 1000000 miles as the dials will read "FULL" and not go over to zero.

My A4 daily is on the original clutch, turbo etc. I've done 90k in it myself and it's just about to roll over 170k. Still drives nice and has less squeeks and rattles than my mates wifes brand new Corsa

Really? You would rather have a vehicle known for its unreliability, poor road handling and shocking running costs instead of an X5 which in comparrison is known for its reliability and car like driving feel?
I'm guessing you must be into offroading In which case your statement is understandable.

All my cars bar the escort have done over 100k, people carrier, 125k, 4x4 140k, van 123k - no worries with any of them.

Quick Reply: Is 100k really that important now?
