Dirty alloy intercooler - How to clean it ????
Was looking at my RS500 style alloy intercooler today that has been on the car for
well over a year now and its looking a bit dirty.
I am not a bufty but like my car to be reasonably clean but its hard to keep it
nice when I use it for my everyday transport.
Does anyone know how I can restore its shine without damaging the
fragile structure of the core elements please ?????

We normally use truck wash and a steam cleaner..
spray at 90 degrees to the core to ensurev the fins do not get bent over.
we normally then pick the fins straight with two stanley knife blades and then spray with a light coat of silver paint (without primer)
hope that helps...

Simon,
I've previously cleaned various rads by gently brushing with detergent in a bit of water, then pressure washing from the BACK - the crap goes in from the front, so washing it out from the back avoids pushing it further into the core. As already mentioned, aim the washer perpendicular to the cooler face, and with moderate pressure/spray pattern to minimise bent fins.

black actually radiates heat better , the problem is the fact you are adding an extra material interface change. Everytime you add a layer of different material you also add some thermal impedance, so the benefit of the better radiation properties can be offset by the additional thermal impedance of the junction of the different materials, potentially making it worse than base material.
