Default Cracked brake disc

A mate called me today to ask for help as his MK1 Focus was making a strange sound.

I got to his house with the tool box and this is what I found....................

The other part was completely missing, What would have caused this level of failure?

Ive seen cracked discs loads of times but never this, I'm suprised he managed to get the car home.

Remember my mate had a mk1 Golf and drove around for weeks with the pads on the metal, when the discs were replaced one was dropped on the floor and it fell apart, was paper thin tho!

Found out why it had broke, He seems to have clumped a curb as the stub axle is slightly bent.
I put the disc on but the caliper bracket wouldn't fit without touching the top of the disc so I guess thats what snapped the disc.
The wheel still seemed to be sitting straight but it obviously wasn't.
I asked him if he had been into a curb and he told me that he did but didn't want to say as he was embarrassed.

Must have smacked it hard,
Been trying to find a replacement hub for it but it seems no one has one.

i know you've found the cause, however ive seen it twice before with cheap discs, i cringe when i'm in any autofactos and hear people asking for cheap discs & pads.

there was something on the tv the other day/week, whereby BMW (iirc) tested some non genuine discs and they shattered

Definitely bent axle, When the new disc is on and you try and bolt the carrier up it touches the disc way before the bolt is even fully in,
I removed the hub yesterday and you can see the gap at the top is much bigger than the bottom, the impact snapped the disc for sure.

People get there knickers in a right twist over discs on cars compared to trucks lol I work for Daf and 90% of truck discs are cracked to fuck! As long as the don't go edge to edge or are more than a mm wide there fine so Daf say! Plus we change one disc loads if the other is ok! ( And thats warranty's choice most the time if its fucked because of a u/s calliper or wheel bearing ) And they have to stop 40 tons!
Also on a trucks it's heat that cracks them

The MAN's are the same, we have had the discs and calipers changed under warranty on all of ours.

Daf ones are aloud 8mm wear off there thickness so will last 300-500'000 Kms but they will be cracked to fuck in that time! Most run with a 3 year drive line warranty so they get changed by daf
