Default BMW 323 help

I bought a e36 323 it had a k&n on that had seen better days was all split and had a big hole in it the car was loosing power so I put the standard air filter back on and although it is running better there is still a few issues it sometimes splutters under load and will hesitate for a second or two before bursting into life then on idle it sometimes runs sweet but then it may cut out without warning and struggle to re start there is a smell of fuel when this happens.

Me not been a mechanic but having a little knowledge self taught I'm thinking the maf sensor a new set of plugs and fuel filter should see it right but before spending anything on it I was wondering if I'm going down the right route I don't wanna flog a dead horse so to speak I don't have alot in the car so I could break for more than I paid with ease but would rather try fix it tbh as it's got a full mot and is taxed for a few months the car is an S reg if that helps

Thanks in advance
