Default Laws on exhaust positioning?

Is there any actual laws on where your exhaust exits the car?

Theres no specific law with regard to exit position other than wherever its placed it has to protrude from the vehicles body line and its position should ensure the exhaust gasses are kept away from the vehicles cabin. I believe that can be interpreted as it should only exit the car past any opening (ie window or door) that could allow gasses to enter the car.

From what I've read of the vehicle builders and construction manual Its a bit of a mine field and has lots of subsections that can be interpreted many different ways.

Cheers guys.

Yeah I can imagine it's a bit of a grey area, and what's okay with one copper/MOT man probably isn't with another.
What do you think about the side of the front bumper?

I'm sure there's a law or MoT rule that stipulates the exhaust cannot exit directed towards pedestrians I.e. On the passenger/nearside. Unless the car came from the factory like that I.e. Caterhams.

I was told this when I fitted my last side exit.

I ran a passenger side exit for years on an old car an never had any bother.

As for exiting upwards - DTM exhausts (if that's the type of upwards you meant)- or the latest VW caddy fad with a vertical pipe coming out of the rear body.

That's annoying, didn't want it on drivers side as it'd be mega loud with the window open!

I did think about the front wing but that's probably pushing my luck

Apart from the MOT rules there is "construction and use", - the exhaust should be in the original position as the car was designed (on a road car)

If its that far forward the exhaust gasses could potentially re- enter the cabin (through an open window etc)

Even on a DTM the exit is (side exit, high up, in the sills) behind the front doors, though the Mclaren SLR its quite far forward (behind the front wheels)

I was thinking about side-exits on mine, but left it at the back as i run a sleeper
