Looks a nice car on the face of it but it's always going to have a stigma because of the history, there's nicer "normal" 3drs about for similar money that would get my money before that one.

By the time you'd found a properly blocked RS500 engine with everything else that goes with it, turbo, inlet etc, which still wouldn't be the original one to the car, and the rear spoilers etc, and god knows whatever else it's missing, it would end up owing you a fortune, and it would still have dodgy history

This one looks nice though, if I was in the market for one I'd just bite the bullet and buy a good one lol

I can believe that, it looks a nice car and sensibly priced for a 500 really.

It doesn't help that the first one has no tax or mot either at that price lol

Interesting read this, would definately be nice to put it to bed for the sake of the official records. So many possibilities, not least that it could be a 3dr on a 500 logbook and we all know what that means....

I suppose you could just take it at face value, and accept the numbers belong to a 500, and leave it at that. If the shell turns out to be a new 3 dr one there will be no distinguishing physical features to say 100%, especially if there is no paper trail to back it up. Strange one.

If a sierra rs 500 was bumped in 1987 and needed a new shell what shell would it have got??? Answer a 3 door shell because the 500 shell was a 3 door shell!
so any reshelled rs500 is a 3 door shell the same as a factory car basically!

More than likely mate, which isn't good really. Far be it from me to speculate, but it also opens up the possibility that the original car was just broken and the ID transferred onto a borrowed 3dr...
Just because it has a vin number and beam that means fuck all.

*Edited because I also meant that if the battery tray was the same as 3dr, then there is nothing to tie it to ever being a 500, i.e no care was taken to preseve the car, which means it's probably a heap of shit.

What a penis saying he would sue you! As an enthusiast i would be over the moon if someone was willing to continue something like that I had started.

As for this car, its dodgy. I feel like the owner knows more about it than he lets on.

I find it strange how cause nobody knows this bloke the car is dodgy and tbh it probably is but if someone well known was selling this with the same story it would be a "bargain 500"

How many escort cossies have been sold over the years with xr3i or rs2000 logbooks and your telling me that isn't dodgy?

So what if it was reshelled? A shell is still a serviceable part, don't forget that. Plenty of cossies gave been reshelled in their lifetime weather accident damaged or rust. So it certainly wouldn't put me off.

TBH if I wanted a cheap 500 then i'd take a punt on this, it's decent 3 door money so you can't really lose either way.

Probably because if it was someone well known selling it you would know the true story rather than a load of bollocks

There are plenty of examples of how internet sensations who everyone bums and sings there praises have turned out to not be as good as people make out.

Its laughable how people say

"x is a good lad his fab work/paint/parts/tuning/cock/service is the greatest"

even though the person saying it has never even used the person but just goes off all the hype on a car forum because that person might own a fast car or they seem a nice person or there in the rs click or whatever.

I'm not saying all these internet sensations are bad just that people do get away with things just cause of unjust hype built up on a car forum.

At the end of the day its still a 500 so will always be between 3 door and good 500 money so could make a good regular use 500 and you wouldn't be frightened of modding it, probably worth a look to make sure story ties up, as long as it was reshelled in new shell then identity should never be an issue, even if its unrecorded now the car is in the open the story can never be hidden.

But it's still missing the right engine, the rear spoilers, the proper intercooler, air box, wiring loom, etc etc etc, unless whoever buys it happens to have all these bits lying around, by the time it's up to proper rs500 spec it would owe a fortune, and you'd probably be into normal rs500 money by that point so I don't see how, other than the chassis number, that you could class it as an rs500

I think the only difference is the corner was cut off the battery tray. Pretty easy to do if you have a hacksaw and a file lol.

I could be wrong though and i'm sure a wealth of knowledge on all things rs500 will be along shortly to tell you there are other differences.

Good discussion!
I think some people are missing the point, or maybe it's me? It's not the sort of car you'd buy to spend a fortune on to put back to standard, noone is saying it will be worth alot more or they'll make money on it. If you wanted to buy an RS500 ID'd car and basically not give a fuck what it's history was, this is the car for you! You can abuse it, boast about it, polish it, neglect it or whatever.

I'd say it's a safer bet at Ł15k (or less with a haggle), than a more genuine car at double the price that still might have less than perfect history. Purley IMO.

Are there any other well known 500s in the RSOC that have been reshelled and had the plates swapped?
Really, i cant think of many mk1 escort mexicos, RS2000s or even mk1 fiesta supersprints etc that can totally prove they are legit on matching numbers and that the shell is the original. Bet most are 1.3Ls that were garaged all their lives and then blessed with a restoration and some total rotbox's vin tags and plate.

rs500 with a new engine? rs500 with a modified loom? rs500 without the rear spoilers?
how many of these are about?(ok forget the last one)
lets be honest here i bet there are a fair few rs500's out there with replacement engines that arent genuine rs500 units.
i think if it was worth this money someone like paul would have been on his way with a trailer, how many people have got the genuine parts to put it back to standard?
