Default Most successful touring car

Im sure I have read somewhere that the RS500 was the most successful touring car.

I googled it and it comes up as the BMW M3.

Is this true then cause from what ive read it sounds like it is.

i think they banned turbo cars which ruled out the rs500. m3's were ok so probably made many more appearances than the 500's

Yes it did win in Oz Glenn.

I've owned 3 E30 M3s and they are sublime, best chassis I've driven.

just like schumaker is the best f1 driver by a long margin, but he wasn't when he came back

I don't think they were really touring cars though back then so probably doesn't count.

The rs500 is the most successful touring car if you measure it against wins per races entered

this is how they measure succsess in race cars as its obvious that the car that raced the longest would be if thats how they chose to measure it

The rs500 IS and always will be the best when the correct way is taken into account

and thats wins aginst races entered

Plus , the rs500 is the only race car that has ever been banned because of its success

The Sierra rs500s grip on the atcc ended when Nissan entered "Godzilla" in the early 90's before they began the 5ltr category in 93 that's just been replaced this year by car of the future class

If you think about it around the world there would of been more teams running the e30 m3 than the rs500. Also the e30 m3 was used till 92 in things like the dtm by works teams. I think the vic lee racing labatts e30 was a m3 but with a 2000cc engine in the btcc.

The rules changed from group a to 5ltr ford / Holden in the atcc to later become the v8 supercars.
I'm sure the skyline was used in Japan in both group a and group n classes till around 94/95 till super touring cars took over. But the skyline continued racing as the gt500 type cars in a different championship and even one as a gt class car at LE mans.

the rs500s raced the r32 gtrs in Australia 1990 - 1992 and the gtr won all of them, imo the r32 gtr deserves just as much credit as the rs500.

its probably worked out in the classes the m3 entered, group a only had sierras pretty much so nothing else to beat, was a supra and a starion and a bi turbo one season but they soon changed to sierras whereas the m3 all over the globe had competition from different manurfacturers, there was more competition in etcc and wtcc so as the m3 won its class pretty much every outing thats prob where the figures come from

There are quite a few videos on U tube of rs500s spanking the r32 so i have no idea where you get that idea from ,,lol

There is one famous video where Dick johnson actualy looks across and smiles as he goes past

And to be fair the nissans are 4x4 ( gay wheel drive )

1992 , pole winning lap ,,,,,,,,,,,,,,against all the very latest up to date nissans , in an outlawed under developed rs500

As said tho , the rs500 wasnt even a developed car by the time it was outlawed , and still rwd , not 4wd

Statistics still put the rs500 as the most races ever won against races entered , and no other race car in history has ever beaten that record

and please remember that FORD pulled all backing from every touring car after 1990 and let the rs500 runners on there own with no ford backing while they still tried to further develop the car

Facts are that ALL manufacturers said they would pull out of touring car raceing if they let the rs500 carry on

Even BMW spatt the dummy out as they couldnt compete

Never in race history was this done and has never been done again , this alone shows that every manufacturer in the world couldnt beat the 500 and it was still at the development stages , Just imagine if they allowed it to race for another 2/3 years
With development still going on

The facts are simple the rs500 couldnt be beat at its own level and cars of 4x4 still worked hard to beat it

The nissans won after 1990 due to brakdowns of the rs500 if you realy do your homework as people running the cars couldnt get parts as ford didnt produce them after 1990

From 1988 to 1990 the rs500 wiped the floor of everything put in its class , and it was a RWD heavy under developed car that didnt have a chassie ideal for touring car raceing , yet still scared all other manufacturers to the point of pulling out as there was simply no way they could compete

the rs500s were great cars theres no denying it I will always have a spot for cosworth, I think the battles the rs500s and the r32s had are awesome to watch

I always remember them racing on the Birmingham street circuit they were quicker on the straights than the f3000 cars of the day even though they couldn't out corner them.
Every touring car series they entered had the rules changed to outlaw them as other manufacturers were not happy even though could have built a similar car if they had of thought about it, best time for road cars back then as to enter a race series they had to build similar road cars, most racing and rallying now have vehicles that haven't been built as road cars so I can't get interested in it anymore
