Default engine change or rebuild? 1.25 zetec

i drive a mk5 fiesta 1.25 as a daily, its on its 2nd engine according to its previous owner and the car itself has just ticked over to 112k

past couple of weeks ive noticed that its using oil, and a plug check turned out its running lean

it went in for an m.o.t last saturday and the tester said that where the piston rings are gone, its burning oil which is then clogging up the cat and telling the ecu to lean the mixture off

you can feel something aint right when you floor it and you can feel it start to hesitate as the revs rise, then it seems to clear itself out and accelerate fine for a little bit

i think its almost certain that the rings are gone because if you take to oil cap off while its running it sounds like another exhaust, and it only puffs smoke when its under load. Its not a bloody lot of smoke but ive been told from behind it stinks

that leaves me with 2 options... new engine or new rings, bottom end bearings and head gasket... and plugs etc

obvious answer being a puma 1.7 conversion which would be awesome but i cant afford to do so on college wages

ive looked on ebay and asked around breakers yards for a replacement 1.25 lump and it looks like id have to pay between £150-£200 depending on mileage

im stuck on what to do, do i spend £100-£120 on parts and rebuild the engine, or a straight swap with a complete unit?

cheers

2nd hand engine. The Zetec SE's were designed to be throw away and not be rebuilt, you'll also spend more rebuilding it than buying another!

i was havin this debate with my old man who was saying about a rebuild but i think i read something on here about the tolerances in the bottom end being so fine that its a pain in the arse i.e cant get the crank reground

looks like ill have to try my luck with a new engine,

ive been told left right and centre to weigh it in but ive just done the suspension and brakes on the fucker to get it driving nice, now the engine is shitting itself its even had a recent clutch change bless it

yes they are a throwaway engine but does not mean they cant be rebuilt, ive rebuilt a few pretty cheap to do if you can do it yourself

I know they can be rebuilt, but when you can get a second hand one for a couple of hundred quid, it seems pointless on a standard one.
