Default Tesco v's BP diesel, MPG...

For the last few weeks I've been doing a little experiment comparing MPG on Tesco and BP diesel in my car.. I heard poeple saying you get better MPG from the higher quality fuels but have never seen it myself (or looked if I'm honest)

Anyhow the car is a 2010 Kia C'eed SW 1.6 CRDi.

Since we've had it we've been running it on Tesco Diesel, purely based on price per litre, and have been consistantly getting 40mpg and the weeks driving mostly made up of town / shopping / school run type driving so probably the worst you can get for good MPG..

For the last 2 tanks I have filled up with BP fuel, which is 2p per litre more expensive locally, so costing around a pound more to fill up 50 ltrs. Almost right away, after resetting everything, the computer was showing and increase in MPG and also tank range but working it out from the milage and amount of fuel when I fill up, both tank fulls of BP have returned 44 mpg.. Both BP tank fulls were also used for the same style of driving as before..

So for every 10 gallons I'm getting and extra 40 miles for a quid and also using a higher quality fuel so for me it's wins all round... I was thinking I might get 1 or 2 MPG improvement but a 10% improvement was way above my expectations..

I know alot of people probably figured this out ages ago but for those doubters, like me, I thought you might like to see some facts and figures as you might think that 2 or 3 pence per litre more is too much but in the longer run you could be better off..

I'll be avoiding supermarket diesel from now on..

thanks for reading.

We have a few tanker drivers come into are place every now and then I work for daf.
People like shell BP and texaco make there own fuel super markets just buy up what ever is cheapest from wear ever so you never really no what your getting or what it's mixed with

I occasionally fill my mondeo up with V Power diesel, I see 50-60 miles extra per tank from it. For me though, the extra fuel cost per tank works out about the same for the extra miles per tank so there is no financial benefit of it, just a better fuel and it seems to run a bit smoother. This is comparing it to normal branded diesel, I have never filled up from a supermarket!

Not diesel but its the same with petrol.

My mondeo does better mpg on normal shell unleaded than it does on tesco normal unleaded.

Not sure of the exact extra mpg but it is better

It's a shame Tesco dont do a 'momentum 99' Diesel

I use the momentum 99 petrol from Tesco and its on a par with with with the V-power & BP Ultimate as far as I can tell. I've ran my car on all of them with the similar MPG returns & Tesco Momentum 99 is cheaper.

Filled up to go Nottingham and back to drop off my boy and seemed to use more diesel with tesco diesel than last time I did it on bp diesel.

morrisons deseasal is worse than esso deseasal

went oop north in the van on the last remains on a tank of esso and the van ran fine, filled up in morrisons on the way back, virtually a full tank with about 5 litres left of the orignal esso fuel, there was a noticable lack of top end power throughout the gears and there was a noticable "lag" form when you put your foot down to any response from the engine
a week or so later and a few tanks of esso in there and things were back to normal again

Yeah found this out about a year ago with my Nissan vanette.

Drove down from Aberdeen on asda pump fuel, wouldn't do over 70 and giving it a bootful it smoked like hell.

Got me further than I thought as it wasn't bad on derv but then suddenly the light came on in Cumbria miles from the nearest town etc.

Had to pull into the dreaded services and ended up paying about 10p a litre more than asda, not happy...

Until I pulled off!!!!

Instantly up to 80 on hills etc and no smoke even flat out,I was sorry I didn't brim it but it got me to Merthyr ok then needed a bit more derv, shoved some texaco stuff in and back to 60/70 mph flat out and smoking like mad.

Pretty much used bp for the rest of the time I owned the van with no issues.

Very impressive fuel.

This has convinced me to give it a go in my diesel.

I watch the MPG closely so I'll keep you posted.

I've never noticed any real difference between cheap fuel and the fancy stuff - and certainly not enough to justify the extra cost.

but you drive posh motors dan, not van's and the like which have racked up around 50k a year, on average, and have mostly had the thrashing of a life time every time the engines fired up

but, that said, on my transit it didn't make any noticeable difference, this was in a vivaro, so perhaps a newer engine with more emissions and stuff?

I have been using Shell V Power NITRO + diesel in my 2.0 tdi a3 and all I have noticed is that it seems to run quieter, which is nice.

A tank of super diesel every few months does wonders to burn of all the supermarket vegetable diesel deposits.

Nice one.. will be interesting to hear someone elses findings..

out of interest what fuel are you using now, supermarket ?

my only other thought is that maybe on the older diesel models, IE the ones that do not use high pressure common rails etc it may not make much difference but on the modern diesels where the delivery of the fuel is much more precise and automatically controlled it probably will make a difference..

There's a Sainsburys next to my work, so I always fill up there. I drive a 2004 BMW 320D and currently averaging around 55mpg.
