What socket to use on ARP rod bolts? + torque'ing question?
just been building my zete cturbo the night and when i came to bolt the ARP conrod bolts i noticed the star sockets ive got dont fit the ARP rod bolt heads
anyone shed any light as to what socket i need to get hold of and buy? and where from, Burton?
also it says to stretch the bolts by tightening them to 27lbft, then slackening, then torqueing to 27lbft, then releasing, then torqueing one last time to 27lbft
following the stretching procedure, i assume i then just torque up the bolt to Ford spec?
cheers

Metric probably - 3/8 inch I'd imagine (which is about 9.5mm so your 10mm is a bit loose).
Torque to the instructions using the special lubricant - not to Fords recommendations. If in doubt call Kent or ARP in america.

the heads of the ARP bolts arent a hex like normal bolts, theyre similar to exhaust manifold studs (star shaped) only they have more points, so my star sockets i use for the manifold studs dont fit the ARP bolts.
and the instructions dont tell you what to torque the bolt to just how to stretch it! and the 27lbft it tells you to use, cant be correct for securing ya con rods, cos its fook all torque!! 27lbft is only about 36Nm!!

just cos 27lbft of torque aint a lot of torque is it, can do that with a small ratchet!!

LOL - year your right - my ARPs are 12pt 3/8 Imperial - I had to special order the right socket (Snap-On do them on their website). 12 point is basically the same as a normal socket but easier to get on in tight situations, if you see what I mean....

There ya go that should be the one!

just wanna know that once ive stretched them as per ARP instructions if i torque them up the same way i would if they were normal Ford bolts. or if i just leave them torque'd at 27lbft, which seems awfully low for a con rod.

It's 28lbft on my spec sheet - ARP 2000 with 3/8 head. Other bolts have other torquing figures, these being the lowest. It recommends measuring and noting the rod bolt lengths - they can be re-used if they have not stretched too much - saves money if you ever have to tear down the engine again - you just replace the ones that are no longer good. Use the lubricant on the threads and under the head of the bolt.

Yeah its a double hex socket not a "E" one or anything.
As for hte torqueing values, torque them up to what they say, and measure the stretch, then look at the stretch value they give.
You will be amazed how far apart it is!
We're literally talking about you get approx half the recomended stretch if you do it up to the ARP specified torque

I dont have a picture of a stretch gauge on PF as i nicked that from a pic i give to owners of engines i build in case they strip em in the future... and the ruler thing is a private joke with someone probably reading this who really did do it with a ruler and gave me a measuremnt to .01

Whats the intended stretch on a cossie ARP rod bolt?
About 4 thou?
and he measured it with a fecking ruler?
And to think on the vauxhall site i use, people generally view cossie owners with a bit of respect and expect them to know what they are doing.
