Sensibly priced alternative to the Toyo R888?

Federal 595 RSR get my vote, about 80% as good as the 888 in the dry, bit better in the wet, last longer and cheaper.
We use them as all round tyres for stuff like ring trips where we dont know what the weather will be but Ive been impressed with them in the dry too.

Damn good question, and wish there was an answer. 888's are just bloody good.
I tried the Federal FZ-201's on the back of mine. Certainly for normal road use, they just seem too hard, so never grip the way they should.
With a bit of a burnout and then a race up the 1/4, they do improve, but obviously that's not practical. So they might make a decent track tyre.
That said, they're near the same price now as an 888....so I'd prob just go for an 888 if spending that money
Couple of friends use the R1R's on their Subarus and they find them very good, not vastly cheaper though.
Used the Kumho's ages ago and they are decent. On wider tyres though, the outer edge goes bald very quickly due to a shallow cut, so the tyres can fall foul of 1.6mm over 75% of the tread very quickly ( on my 265's that was barely over 1000 miles )
The centre bands still had plenty of depth though, but that was the only "tread" visible.

The only tyre ive found anywhere near the grip of the 888 was the Dunlop DO1J & they are no longer available. I would be facing the wrong way very quickly at my Power level without wide 888 on the rear. Dont change Ade it will be a step backwards unless you are going to enter drift events .

Dunlop to a D03 now, although retail prices are far above the 888
Havent heard much reports about the newer Yoko's etc but having tried other tyres, I'm coming to the conclusion that the 888's are worth it.
However. And I dont know how well they would work or last. But there are a lot of Rally type tyres that are E-marked and road legal and in various compounds. I just cant find any info or people using them.

possibly remoulds ?

It would be nice to find out some info on the above tyres, especially as different compounds are available.

TBH, any decent rwd car is going to suck, even with 888's
Other than the 0-150 there, which gives a little extra room to play, anything 0-80mph or so in a rwd car is the worst event you could enter simply due to lack of grip, unless it's at Santa Pod.
But any other crap surface, airfields etc...they're just terrible for grip. Best tyres Ive found so far are the Hoosier drag radials. Not road legal obviously.
Ive seen guys use some Avon hillclimb/rallycross slicks which work very well, but still havent managed to find exactly what tyre they used.
Not sure what Turnover used on his car ? he seemed to get great results.

And are the tyres just for that purpose, or for road use too ? ie would you have spare wheels for a more dedicated tyre just for those events ?

Now that I will have no more problems with the diff breaking I can see me getting through the rear tyres extremely quickly, hence the reason I asked the question about cheaper alternatives.
I think a few people will be quite surprised with how well it will do in the 0-60 0-100 etc as it really does have awesome grip once there is temperature in the rears, JamesH can vouch for this

Its mostly to do with the tyre specification bollocks the EU has pushed through meaning that certain road legal slicks wont be produced as they wont meet the legislation.
Doesnt mean the tyres still in circulation or the stocks youve aquired are illegal to use on the road.

The tyres are for use on the road and track, I've run R888's this way for years now, but because my 71/2" diff was the weak link - plus it has amazing traction with the Ahmed Bayjoo 6 degree rear beam/R888 combination - I have never been able to do full blooded launches without the crown wheel spitting it's teeth every where.

But if they are available in soft or super soft compounds, it would be hard to imagine them not being better. How long they might last is another matter. 888's just do everything very well and get sensible mileage.
It's just a pity most tyres are so bloody expensive, makes trying anything different a gamble.

I'd think that some of the Silverstone tyres listed above would be better than the 888's. Problem is, I just cant find any information on them !

Ive been looking for 2 years !!
Still cant bring myself to buy any of them lol.
Bought the FZ201's 2 years ago, and was a bit disappointed. Obviously I'm more interested in simple straight line cold traction.
I had some Michelin Pilot sport cups before that, they were atrocious. Took them off within a few hundred miles. Slippier than normal road tyres !
But with that disappointment, it's made me overly cautious about any cheaper tyres. I'd like to try some of those rally tyres, but just cant find any feedback.
I have some old 888's that I bought years ago, but they're pretty much wiped out now

typical, the MAD crew has no idea ..... did the grand master Mark not give you sheep advice ??
I'd ask someone who has attended trackdays, not just top speed runs in cars that aren't safe.
have a good day and keep ur heart rate controlled when you read this

The funny bit is Mark doesn't like R888's

i am a great asset
im the only one who dares say MAD followers are sheeps and that you need an IQ below 5 to be a member in their eloquent group. whats wrong with those facts ?

Other than the fact he uses the most up to date and modern parts on a yb pushing there limits further than anyone else with a road going yb engine. Plus makes the engines with the most power and torque and is an extremely knowledgeable man in his profession not a lot really if that's your opinion
