Default Can anyone identify this part please?

Really need to know what that is it appears to have just fallen off my mums car
It's an 04 plate Ibiza FR (1.9tdi). It's on about 120k and has never not been mechanically sound.
It made a few loud clunks from the front offside as we were pulling out of a car park (I think when the steering was turned left), about a mile later there was a bit of a rattling as we drove over them yellow line things to slow your speed an then a few seconds later bang, clunk and heard that drop onto the road.
The left hand side in the second pic looks like its sheared off?? The coating is a bit corroded but it's solid metal and hasn't rusted off.

It's not wet or muddy so pretty sure it did come off the car and wasn't already on the road.

Any ideas please?

Thanks for quick replies guys.

So its come off the main suspension spring then and that needs replacing?
Can it be driven or is the front end likely to collapse or something?
It's due an mot in a few weeks anyway.

best to get both replaced before doing any distance or it will start to effect other things like bushes, tracking etc

You can still drive it if your really have to but i'd get it changed sooner than later.
It'll probably be a front spring, if it is change both front springs.

I'd get it looked at soon as, as continuous driving could dislodge the spring and impale the tyre we get it all the time at work,

Thank you for the replies guys.

I'll take the wheel off and check the tyre is ok and see if anything it sticking out where it shouldn't be.
Is it worth checking the passenger side?

Haha yes my nails are yellow, orange and green and I purposely included my hand on the photo as a size reference. Aren't I clever?!

Don't drive it. If you're taking it to a garage, get it recovered.

I've been called out to a lot of broken springs recently and a lot of them have damaged the tyre where they've been driven. Depending on where they've broken, they can also damage the top strut bearing as well especially on Ibiza's (I've seen quite a few as I used to work at a Seat dealer as a master tech).

I had a look and it's right up the top where it's snapped.

Also thinkin it may have been snapped off for a while and only worked itself loose today? Shes heard clunks and rattles a few times and even small ruts in the road have been making a loud thud and it hasn't felt quite right.
Would the end that snapped not be clean and shinier if it had only just gone?

happened to me on my mondeo

still drove but it made loads of nasty noises

they were because the top mount had also broken

change them in pairs for sure but just remember that there may be other dmaage that isn't noticable until everything been removed, mine fell apart once out of the car and not under load

I had 2 snapped springs over the course of owning an old Mondeo.

1st one snapped and simply rattled about a bit.

2nd one snapped and the rest of the spring on the car sprung out with such force it burst the tyre on the inside wall

jack the side up thats broken and spin the wheel and turn lock to lock and double check it

As above, had a snapped spring on the back of my mondeo, it was hanging out of the spring cup, about half an inch away from the tyre! I jacked it up, popped it back into the spring cup and cable tied the fooker in, got me home!

Well, car went into Seat today, which was the soonest they could get the springs, and it needs a top mount and bearing and a cv boot.
They quoted £240 for doing the springs but it'll be £405 for other parts, and they can't get them until probably Tuesday.

It's doing MY head in and its not my fucking car!!
My mum won't drive it so it's cost me £60 since Tuesday taking her to work or letting her take my car.
And, I don't like people driving my car. hmph.

Decided to use Seat because I had trouble sourcing the correct parts because all the parts places I tried, online and on phone, just kept giving me the springs for a standard 1.9tdi because the engine numbers matched. But the springs are obviously different for an FR and Cupra, so being as only the Seat dealers were acknowledging this, we just decided to go there. And, kind of anticipated something else being wrong!

Typical dealer it needs this that and the other lol. Get it off elsewhere. When is it due an MOT? All those parts listed above are a failure so will be picked up.

Yeah they tried to get us to have a service by saying it needs belts and brake fluid change, coolant change etc
It's due MOT in April anyway so needs doing.

Ellie instead of going to the stealers, how about buying a set of after market springs and have them fitted at a local ?.Its going to be cheaper.
My mum did the same years ago.For some unknown reason she bought a sierra 1.6ilx ESTATE !!.Told me the steering was clonking and it was a snapped spring.Duno to this day why she bought that car as post ones were like mr2 and now BM E93 .Strange person my mum lol.

I don't think the dealer is saying it needs a top mount and bearing just to rip you off, when I worked for a Seat dealer I always had to replace the top mount and bearing as they used to fall apart when the spring broke.

Should only need one top mount and bearing though unless the other one shafted too.

They should have also included replacement of all of the bolts as well as they are stretch bolts that should only be used once.

Because they're a pain to get and if anything else is wrong, which it was, we'd then have to piss about getting that.
Don't know anyone to do 'mates rates' and Seat gave us a discounted labour charge.

No, I don't think they were bullshitting either. I'd phoned another seat dealer beforehand and they told me the bearing will probably be buggered with it snapping at the top. I didn't mention that when I called the dealer it went to either.
Yeah, I think it was just the one side they put the top mount on because I'm sure it'd have been more than £400, and the other side wasn't broke.

It's all done now anyway, earlier than expected.
