Default :( :( Just had the AA out!

Remember my post about wiring in a ciggy lighter the other day?
I did this, fused it with a 15 amp fuse and it all worked fine!

Just been out in it and the car cuts out, battery died!

Try and jump it, and it does it again!

So I disconnect battery and call the AA!

He comes out with his big torch and shows me the ignition is burnt and the battery cable (fused wire) or something has melted!

Lucky I didnt set fire but I will have the dash out tommorow and call an auto sparky

Am so gutted!

Cig lighter is quite a high draw so 15 amp would be on the low side. 20A would be better. However that would just mean it kept popping the 15A fuse.

Are you saying that your repairs were responsible for these other faults?

Got to take dash out tommorow to see the wiring behind dash but it has melted a connector's innards on the ignition

Did you connect the ciggy lighter direct to the battery?

Get some photos up tomorrow when you've got the centre part out (the part that holds the radio and the ashtray) Im struggling to understand how running another feed from somewhere to the back of the lighter could have buggered up the loom Surely you soldered properly and covered all the joints with insulating tape.

Bad news though bloke. At least the whole car isnt destroyed, that would have been no fun at all!

As Rich W said, if there was a lower rated fiuse in, it would just blow and that would be it. Might be something else somewhere under the dash that casued it.

I can only guess that you left some bare wire somewhere then causing a short?

I must have

Will double check it tommorow and just hope it is just the battery and a couple of wires and a couple of connectors

wouldnt it overload by doing that , the yellow wire is alot thicker than
cig lighter wire in it

did you put the fuse inline with the wire you joined or just used the
one in the fuse box

if the one in the fuse box blow the current would be still there as you
are getting the power from the ignition

I am in Coventry! The car is on my drive now and it wont be moving

It is my only car so I hope it can be sorted tommorow, my mums bf is a technician at land rover so he will have a look but if not I suppose I will have to pay for an auto leccy!

The AA man said it had been overloaded

I am just gonna cut all the wires out I have added tommorow and then see what is damaged and what isnt and make a shopping list or see if I can get the parts tommorow

Just a little bit too far for me or i would have had a look at it for you!
I'm sure someone off here who is good with electrics must be a bit more local and will take a look though? Get some pics up of the damaged wiring if you get stuck

Thankyou guys
I know for a fact the connector that goes to the ignition has melted some of the inside and the battery wire (red ones) that go toward the bulk head are melted towards the top!
The ignition doesnt seem to want to let the battery lights come on any more at point 3 but the stereo was still coming on
My mums bf will be able to spot the problem it just depends if I will be able to find a new ignition / alt (if that was damaged) on a Sunday
