.. After reading lots of track car related threads on here, and with this being a Ford place and the same non ford car coming up in most threads i thought well must be a good unbiased view.

So last Saturday i bid on this on ebay, and Today i went and picked it up, only took it for a quick spin but bloody heck i am impressed, pulls like a train and handles like nothing ive driven for a long time!!

had this exact conversation with jay the other night...

we both agree that technically fords are rubbish, the yank ones, the german ones and the UK ones.....but.....and here's the catch....they have a heart and a soul.... something a jap car will never ever have and no italian car was ever lacking....

and i think in all honesty that heart and sould is what we fall for.

for most a ford is now part of their dna, myself it was when my dad and his dad owned them and my first job leaving school was working for them at godfrey davis in neasden, and now my daughter is crazy about them so its passing down the line, normally they are a honest working class car with a few perks and if lucky they will start on a frosty morning

I do agree, but it is also the reason most of us drive BMW's daily and spunk money trying to keep the Fords we have looked after and on the road lol

German tanks for daily's now and Fords for passionate driving of a weekend lol

These are great little cars, really impressive. They do big miles if looked after.

I bought one a couple of weeks ago and it's sat on my drive. I had to start it the other day to have a move about & stick it in the garage, it hadn't moved for those 2 weeks. As with most 'new' cars I buy I'm always dreading every time I start them for a while. I started this clio and it was alive the moment I turned the key and idling perfectly, no noises or fuss just an amazingly silent perfect idle. This one is a phase 2, done 85k but the guy had looked after it well owning it over 4 years and sparing no expense servicing it, last service in Nov he dropped £850 on it having new brakes done, service and mot. Most of these you'd expect to be run on a shoe string or neglected at their price! Especially amazing when you consider I paid just £1400 for it, awesome little cars for the money.

It got me looking at Renaults and the 197 clio's for myself.

Brilliant cars,just bought another 182 a few weeks ago myself.

Just make sure the belts have been done or get them done just to be on the safe side.

I have a momo boss and steering wheel here for one if you want to get rid of the nasty looking wheel they have.

Done 112k, and i paid £820 for it.

Unfortunately there is no paper work other than the MOT slip and logbook, popped the cover off to look at the cambelt today and doesnt actually look that old.

I'd consider replacing both belts in that case just to be on the safe side.If the aux belt snaps it takes the timing belt with it and the engine's toast.

It's an expensive one but worth it for peace of mind

Price varies depending on where you go,I was £550 in our local Renault on the last 182 but that was 4 years ago now,my wee brother was up over the 700 mark last year for his in the same place but I'm certain he had other bits done too.

I've got a receipt here for my latest one at near £600 from an independant garage and it was done just in December not long before I bought it.

Best bet is to get on www.cliosport.net and find a local specialist,there's also a lot of very helpful and knowledgeable guys on there to help out.

Just belts is about £450, make sure you check what that includes as some don't replace cam seals etc. Make sure a specialist does the job as they must have all the correct tools, timing is key to a good one. Had mine done last month by one of the top guys and it's a different car now.

History went with it to Renault - it was quite comprehensive... it had some belts on it but he can't remember which.

Fred did them - anyone in the Midlands who's into 172/182's will know who Fred is.

Ill be honest, with what ive paid for it, if the cambelt does snap, ill strip it and buy another one, its a budget car.

I was saying to my mate when we drove it back, looking at the general condition of things we both said i bet it did have proper comprehensive service history at one point in its life.

Really is a small world eh!

Bound to, first thing he does when he sees a new customer is see if the reg means anything to him.

that reg doesn't come up on my system, it probably had a "normal" plate on at some stage, if you can find out the previous owners name or the original plate or even the date the work was done i can check a lot easier, we see hundreds of clios so don't know!

So if you have the original number I can try again

Ouch! £450 for new belts and kits. I guess they must be a pig of a job to do. Are the dephasers expensive to do as well? Been offered an 02 plate that needs all belts, etc doing but for less than £1k. Not sure if it's worth entertaining now as a local runabout for the wife.
