Default ok, im f*cking off NTL... whats the BEST adsl provider?

im talking companies like pipex, Demon etc. etc.

i want UNLIMITED bandwith. and a good quality of service.

minimum 256k upload speed (altho 512k would be nice if they can do it) and a minimum of 1mb download speed.

all the bits like free webspace, emails etc. etc. dont interest me at all...

altho a static IP Address would be nice

Telewest is awesome! I would give them 11 out of 10 they really are that good

Shame you can't have it being in an NTL area

They are planning to cap EVERYBODY's download limits so I think this may be his problem?

Telewest
telewest are a cable provider i want ADSL

ntl customer service failed to mention their 3gb a MONTH bandwith limit on the service they swapped me over to on thursday, and now theyre saying i can't move back so decided to loose the phone, tv, and broadband from them and go for a BT phone, Freeview telly, and decent ADSL subscriber.

works out cheaper too :P anyway i always wanted a decent adsl provider, the cable 128k upload limit SUX :P plus i can use a half decent wifi adsl router now too finding one to work with my NTL connection was proving to be a nightmare

Jim, I've just migrated to ukonline - not the cheapest (but I have my e-mail accounts with them also) at £24 for 512 but upgrading to 2mb next month at £29 with the option of 8mb in the future. All uncapped.

60gb a month is still not enough for me i'm afraid

matt, 1mb is 128kbps

also you havent factored in compression, so your true line rate might be different

try this, download a 10mb zip file

now download a 10mb text file

notice how the text file downloads quicker

ok, i'm deffo swaying towards the pipex 1mb service at the moment. anyone know if it's a dynamic IP or static IP? as a static IP / hostname would be quite handy

i know 1mb is 128kbps and that figure tells me its higher nobby. in comparison i never got more than 60 on their 512 connection

static ip is optional at extra cost

Jim if you are doing more than 60gb a month which equates to at least 2gb a day. Thats a serious amount of downloading. What do you actually download if you dont mind me asking. You will probably need to go on to a business tariff if 60gb a month is not enough.

tony... bittorrent mate

since i come from the "old skool" internet lot (back when we had 2400bps modems!) i'm of the mindset that you can't "waste bandwith" i seem to have it programmed into my head that if i'm not always using my connection 100% then i'm not "GETTING MY MONEY'S WORTH" which is why i am ALWAYS downloading something, even if its something i dont even need/want i just cant stand to have that bandwith meter not showing full all the time also the PC stays on 24/7 so work that out... with 1mb broadband i will download about 10GIG a day... thats 300gig a month... so i dont think 60gb will cut it

realistically i never really download more than about 3gb a day... but thats still more than 60 a month

you can see why the 3gb a month cap i've got on this NTL connection is a bit uselsss

Pops,

Dynamic IP is when you lease an IP address and that lease expires on a regular basis. Meaning u're IP address changes regularly.

Fixed IP is the opposite, you are assigned a single IP address and you keep that address forever basically - which means you can host services from your connection - Web sites, FTP etc...

I regulary connect to my home PC using remote desktop from work cause my IP address is always the same.

was thinking about ukonline... but i think its got to be too good to be true... i wanna go with a proven reliable service, not some shonky crap one. and i never heard of UKO

ebr, ever thought of using a dynamic DNS service? like DNS2GO? you run a little TSR and it will update the DNS records with a hostname of your choosing every 10mins or so. that way if your PC changes ip address it still keeps the same hostname... very handy! thing is 99% of thse services are chargeble

Yeah I've looked into these before, but at the mo I dont need it. My IP address has only ever changed once in the entire time I've had my NTL broadband.

But I think unless there's a need to, u just get renewed with the same IP address.

I've had my broadband for almost a year now, and its only changed the once.
