Default Oil Coolers

Just had some advice about oil coolers saying there a trap for "shit"

Basically he said that shitty unfiltered shit sits at the bottom of the cooler so regardless of when you drain the oil to change it there is still the silt and shit in the bottom of the cooler, so the oil quickly gets contimated again.

Any thoughts out this?

Some people fit drain plugs to their coolers, for that very reason. Or, do as i've done, fit the cooler so that the unions are at the bottom. So when you do an oil change, undo one of the unions to drain the cooler at the same time.

It does make sense as the Oil passes through the Oil Cooler before the Oil Filter.

I would just take the Cooler off and flush it every few months.

Alternatively, I suppose you could set up a Remote Filter inline with the Feed TO the Oil Cooler.

Christian and Beccy,
It does make sense as the Oil passes through the Oil Cooler before the Oil Filter.

how does it ?

oil pump strainer -> oil pump -> oil filter -> oil cooler should always be this way

mine , is , fitting onto the block - out put from the oil pump (main gallery) into the oil filter , from the filter to the cooler , then back to the fitting on the block to return to the sump no way does the cooler fit in front of the filter

The sandwich plate goes b4 the oil filter BUT does it tee off on the Input or Output of the oil filter.

Well if you still have your oil filter after the sandwich plate, and it's not remotely mounted, then the flow should be inside out.

You should have the oil flow through the sandwich plate, therough the filter and out.

Well, theres the answer then, if it goes through the filter BEFORE going through the Oil Cooler, then you wont need to worry.

If the oil cooler is before the oil filter then why worry either? Anything that gets dragged out of the bottom of cooler will be filtered straight away before passing through the engine!
