I have the boxster S the engines can have troubles like coil pack an maf but Id say find one with low miles per year an lots of oil changes but also not a garage queen ! its quick , turns sweet and brakes well plus it is a car that gives good feed back so far mines been sweet and its a daily .
mines the s with 71 thou miles full history all mots an sports design 18" split rims

Had 2 boxsters, a 2.5 and a 3.2 S.
They can suffer from engine failures, but what car doesn't? % wise for the number of cars out there it's very small. Would have another tomorrow, superb to drive and can be made to go VERY quickly on a twisty road, albeit without the punch of a turbo'd car but I think you'll be pleasantly surprised.
Build quality is second to none IMO.

hi mate not true really, only evo 4 engines have real issues due to crankwalk and cracked ringlands, this was sortred out by mitzy by changing the main bearings and stronger pistons, evo cranks are good for well over 500bhp and evo 6 pistons with forged rods are good for 550bhp, and oem pistons themselves are not even forged, standard evo,s from e5 onwards are good for say 380bhp with out changing anything so mitzy have done a good job, i was in my mates 560bhp with standard transfer box, the other good thing is just about all parts from evo 4 to 9 fit , so when i built my 6 up from the crank up i got evo 8 MR OEM full gasket set think only 2 gaskets wud not fit, when i built my E3 up i put Evo 9 GT RS pistons in.. all in all this makes the 4g63t a very easy engine to work with..

Come on eveyone knows the standard rods and bolts are rubbish thats why everyone changes them lol mapping is a lot to do with it tho my VII RS runs a stock Engine with modded turbo done 60k and few other bits running just under 400/400 with anti lag with throttle kicker and launch control gets hammered from start up and never gets cooled down its just a trackday car dont give a toss about it and other than a headgasket its never missed a beat. The guy that maps the MoTec goes around the world doing race, rally and drag cars so he knows what he's doing

People change them after stage 1 but to say they're rubbish is a tad ott most evo's are running 400/400 very rare they go at that power not unless the driver's hammered it to death. A rod job's only a grand if mores wanted anyway hardly mortgage money, the clutch and gearbox would let go before anything on the engine shit itself in most cases.

Yep fly end of the crank can weep ,you can put an uprated one on ,also they have a plastic tube with "o" rings that seals the coil packs from the main engine oil they can leak easy fix but a good way to get a price drop !

Early 2.5's are the main ones for engine failures mainly down to the intermediate shaft bearing failing...chances are all the ones with the crap bearings have either been replaced oř have already failed!
Overall they are not bad motors but would go for the facelift if any

i think theyre both nice motors, but personally, i would have the evo for its rarity. dont see too many on the roads and that makes it a bit more desirable.
the boxster however is too a very nice car, but a lot more sophisticated. you could turn up to a posh venue in a boxster and also hoon it around the track on a weekend.
this makes the evo look a little "less sophisticated" for the dinner party scenario. (no offence meant to anyone with an evo)
it all depends what you want in a car to be fair.
if you can afford a 911, then thats a no brainer!!

I love Porsches. However, the only thing I'd be thinking while driving a cockster, is 'I wish this was a 911'........
Evo wins. Hands down.

I went passed a 3.2 s in my old E36 M3. They guy was trying to give it the big one! His passanger was laughing his nuts off.
I would opt for something else rather than the Boxster... your comparing a road going rally car to a soft GT kind of car.
I would go for a E46 M3 or get a stripped out track preped E36 M3 Evo and enjoy
Or another Cosworth

If I find myself in the dinner party crowd, I'll just top myself and be done with it.
Exactly, I'd rather have an old shagged 911 than a new cockster. I'd even drive a 996 over a cockster!

Boxster 3.2 = getting quite cheap now but under powered, over tyred dull to drive, horrible inside and not as well built as older Porsche models. Only reason to buy one would be if your wife or mother wanted one! Had a 3.2S was very average thing to drive.
Evo on a different level all together to drive and better built, 9GT is the one to get.
