Default Porsche Cayenne 3.2/4.5,common issues?

Looking at about the £12K mark, seems theres some very nice ones about around this mark but I know little about them.

Were also considering an evoque but this wil need to be financed whereas the Porsche could be bought with a bit of saving and jiggery pokery.

Looked at rangey's but they seem sheds for the same price, plus I really fancy one of these.

Your thoughts welcome.

My old mans got an '02 Cayenne V8, its fucking lovely in my opinion. Only problem he's had is the rear washer pipework keeps disconnecting, although thats probably his fault for putting screenwash in and not using it regularly enough, hence blockin up the jet!

If the Evoque is anything like a Freelander it stands all the makings of been a serious piece of shit! Just an opinion, mind!!

Against popular opinion on here i actually rate them! Alot!
infact i'd go as far as saying its the best 4x4 by far lol.
I went from a 11 plate 5ltre supercharged range rover sport (bought at we buy any car trade price)
which i found cramped/ridculously thirsty and generally useless,
to a BMW 1M and a 2004 black Cayanne 4.5 s with 120k for the mrs.

The Cayenne cost me £6k and came fully loaded with full s/h and its only gremlin being it needing the tracking doing and a good detail.

In my opinion they are an absolute bargain.
I'm 6ft 2" myself, i find it comfortable and spacious and it handles like a sports car.
ive driven most the 4x4's out there and the cayenne has the best handling of them all including its Toureg cousin,
Mine has been reliable however, before i gave it to the boss i did give it a full service and replaced the original plastic water pipes with the updated metal pipes as these are prone to fail.

my advice to any potential buyer would be;

Check the oe plastic pipes have been replaced with porsche metal pipes (it should be a porsche recall and although its not) Burgesshill Porsche sold the pipes to me for £360 (£200 cheaper than list)

Gearbox's are sealed for life although i paid to get a specialist to change the old oil,
(look out for any issues)

Tires do wear quickly so keep some funds aside and buy a hard compound for the rear as they dont ever slide and so dont need to be that grippy and wont wear as fast as soft rubber like michelin pilots (they lasted me 4000miles lol)

You hear horror stories about all cars.
Dont let that put you off!
These things are great if they have been serviced correctly.
Due to the mpg being in the low 20's alot of people want to get out of them and so there are bargains to be had-if the car you go to view hasnt had the water pipes or the gearbox oil changed knock the price down.

In short these cars are so good id have my 54 plate 6k one over any land rover made car-brand new or otherwise.

hope that helps
cheers jamie

You can buy a brand new dacia 4x4 for less than 10k!

Jamie, where the hell can you find them for 6k?

Found mine in autotrader.

It was a car dealers dads car, it was up for 7250 and i made the offer of 6k after talking to the guy and getting the feeling that he wanted rid,
his dad had already bought a new car (maseratti quattroporte)
bargains are out there-you just got to call around and find the right seller.
cheers jamie

Having just spent 3 months travelling over 2 thousand miles looking at every cayenne turbo i could find under 18k i would say avoid like the plague!.

Every single car i looked at had at least one fault, some had a list as long as your arm of things to be fixed.
The non turbo 4.5's have a known liner issue creating a bottom end rattle and eventually seizure and they give the same consumption as the turbo model which is odd. I havent looked at the 3.2's so have no idea of common issues.

Some of the faults i found on turbo/turbo S cars for sale during my search were.. Interior plastics brittle or broken - air suspension faulty (on 3 different vehicles) - gearbox manual mode not working - timing chain tensioners rattling thier tits off - random warnings like airbag/suspension/engine management/fluid level warnings constantly flashing up on the dash - electric or heated seats inoperative- tyres wearing heavily on the inside edge mainly on the front - coil pack failure- pcm failure so no radio nav or computer.

As has allready been mentioned there are 2 plastic coolant pipes that run under the inlet manifold that will split/crumble if not changed. if they havent been done (and its nigh on impossible to see them without removing the plastics in the engine bay and using a torch and mirror) its quite an expensive thing to have done but not impossible if your handy with the spanners.

Saying all that i do still have a thing for them especially with one of the techart styling kits and i would still like to get one at some point along with a very comprehensive warranty (for which i was quoted £800 for a years cover)

I bought a low mileage fsh 1 owner bmw 4.8is x5 3 weeks ago instead of a pig so i could have reliable 4x4 motoring and........ the air suspension has gone wrong and the engine management light comes on sometimes when its really cold so it doesnt really matter what you buy, its the luck of the draw. you could buy a pig and never have an issue

Some interesting views then guys, thanks for the feedback.
Most of the ones I've been looking at are around 54/05 plate and some were well under 50000 miles, which I know does'nt mean everything but the equivalent rangey was 100/120K and being as they have a poor rep anyway I felt that really would be a money pit.

Plus the fact I usually see at least 2 broken down on my travels up and down the country (deadly serious!!!!).

I must admit to liking the X5 but there do seem to be a lot of them about right now, although I'm never sure if thats good or bad.

We currently have a merc ml on a w plate which considering the mileage and work it's done has'nt been too bad, although it has had a few costly repairs however I'm told the newer model is a lot less reliable and £12k is about entry level on one so I think its not really on the cards.

Might have a quick look at the Touaregs, although I know someone who had one and it was pretty troublesome but it seems thats the luck of the draw sometimes!!!
