every on in 3 weeks i have a very quick turnaround, finish a 12hr 20min shift at 07.20 and start again at 17.30 on the friday tea time. so i'd tend to agree with the 8 hr one, wether its right or not tho

yeah 8 hours break from shifts

i know as thats what i had to do once every 2 weeks, finished at 2330 and started at 0730. but that was when i was working in a halls of residence and they let me sleep there ina room so i wasnt late for work ( how well did they know me )

was cool tbh as when i finished at 0730 in the morning on a night shift i wouldnt start till 1530 the next day giving me more that 34 hours off

i loved that job , wy did i ever leave

it depends on what job you do and how much break you have during your wokring hours

i used to drive a bus and on a normal day you HAD to have at least an 8 hour break if you didn't work for more than 8 hours the previous day (not work from midnight to 8 am and then come back at 4pm to work till midnight)

we used to have some 13.5 hour shifts but they had a total of about 2 hours worth of breaks in them so we could do the 8 hour trick, if they didn't we had to have a 10 hour break

there's also somethign baot having to have a certain amount of break every few hours as wll, but it's been so long that i've forgotten

mind yu, i had 6 hours break last night (only 4 of them was sleep)

Mmmm yet again many people giving what they think the law is

Ok the Working time many of the regulations YOU CANNOT opt out of they are there for H&S reasons The main one that you can opt out of is the 48hrs rule ie the most hours you will work is 48 in one week

If you opt out of this or have done from the start and no longer want to work more than 48hrs (especially if salaried) you must give 17 weeks notice in writing to your boss

The rules around breaks YOU CANNOT OPT Out of unless in certain jobs that i have copy pasted for you

Adult workers in

transport (ie workers in the airline industry who are covered by the Aviation Directive, road workers who are subject to the Road Transport Directive, sea workers as covered by the Seafarers' Directive and mobile workers in inland waterway and lake transport) - although this exclusion does not apply to non-mobile workers who are employed in sea fishing and transport, inland waterways and lake transport.

sea fishing and other work at sea

services such as the police and armed forces where their activities conflict with the provisions of the regulations

are excluded from the following rights along with doctors in training:

the maximum weekly working time

the length of night work

health assessment for night workers

the transfer of night workers to day work on health grounds

daily rest

weekly rest

rest breaks and

paid annual leave

From 1 August 2004, doctors in training will be subject to weekly working time limits which will be phased in over a five year period.

Those in domestic service or whose working time is unmeasured or predetermined, either in part or totally, are excluded from certain rights.

Additionally other adult workers in specified industries or engaged on certain activities (for example work in prisons, agriculture, essential services such as gas or electricity) may be excluded from some of the rights, for example daily and weekly rest, rest breaks, provided that an equivalent period of compensatory rest is given.

The question was about how long between shifts well the law states 11 hours between them

Remember you cant opt out of this its there to protect everyone so if YOUR boss is scheduling you on back to back shifts ie ones with less than 11 hours and you dont do one of the excluded rolls above i suggest you have a word and point out the link below to them

Hope this helps some of you out
