If they ever do put VED onto the fuel price, they should add basic 3rd party insurance as well. That way, there'd be no uninsured drivers on the road either. If you want fire, theft or own damage cover then buy an additional policy to cover that.

slightly off topic but how about this for a kick in the baws

had one of those fancy dan metal tax disc holders which was stuck to the windscreen with those little sticky tabs.

Car was parked outside the house for a few days in the middle of summer. The heat on the windscreen melted the adhesive and the tax disc and holder had fallen face down into the passengers side footwell. You could clearly see it if you peered through the window though.

Came out one day to find a ticket slapped under my wiper with a £30 fine for not having a valid tax disc displayed. Some cant must have noticed, assumed I had no tax and grassed me up.

The problem I see is that linking "car tax" to emissions is unfair, as Magnum says. But linking it to fuel, and thus usage, is also unfair on a couple levels.

For example, my mate has a derv Beemer, which gets on average 40mpg. My Lexus gets about 20. So if we both do say 10,000 miles a year, he's paying less fuel, and less "tax" than me.

What's also been mentioned before, maybe not in this thread, but in other discussion, is basing the average cost a car causes to roads, etc, per mile or whatever, and adding it to the cost of a litre. Well that's all well and good, but a heavier car will inflict more wear to the roads (in theory), and then you still get shafted on the cars that aren't used much, as they are taking them into account for calculating the wear per year, but they might only do half a years worth of mileage.

At the end of the day, we pay enough in fuel tax, so "road tax" should be scrapped full stop.

.

then it becomes your choice in running a more uneconomical car and using more fuel, so more tax.

and yep the heavier car does more damage, but will do worse mpg over a small lighter car, so less tax

Very true rich, in the heavy rain the other week the missus was out running on the purton to basset road where one part of the road had flooded on a corner. Her mate went though the middle and was fine, helen went round the edge and found a fucking great hole and after s trip to hospital, had a badly sprained ankle! Id have made a claim myself..

Saying that, im not silly enough to go running lol

Diesel us on average about 7p per litre dearer than petrol currently?

So higher diesel economy is tempered by it being more expensive than petrol, so that would have to be reflected so petrol users were no worse off tax wise than diesel users.

I agree though that we as motorists are taxex enough, but if the country suddenly lost X billion in income from scrapping road tax, something else would have to be taxed more to make up the shortfall.

If we are to continue with the current set up, then VED should be ringfenced to spend on the roads to ensure our road network is up to scratch.
At the moment it just goes into the pot to be spent as the government sees fit.

my mgb is tax exempt, there is something very satisfying about going to the post office and getting a free tax disc

the jeep is £270 a year the wifes vectra is a factory lpg car so think hers is only £170 for the year

havent taxed the rs yet, wont do anytime soon either if work doesnt pick up

Isn't there a higher rate tax for the first year if you buy a brand new car? I'm sure I saw an evo x with a £1k tax disc. No new wonder car sales have dropped.
Also hasn't the tax exempt threshold stopped at 1973? For example if I bought an old mk3 escort, as years go by it isn't going to become tax exempt like older cars used to.
Its just a money maker for the government I doubt very much the system will change within the next ten years.

Wonder how people free about the guys that report people speeding in their fast fords, same thing really...

Btw road tax for a 4.0 would be over 1800e here in Ireland

Yes when 'Labour' came into power a long time ago they froze the rule, thereby ending the rolling program.
