Before you do decide to buy one, look to see how much replacement cartridges cost. Sometimes you can get cheaper ones although the printer is dearer and viceaversa ...

Porkie,

I would say your problem either lies with the Printer Setup, Printer Driver Setup, Image setup or a duff printer/print head/cartridges. I have an epson at work, which is a cheap and nasty £90 job. It's not even a PHOTO specific printer, but I can get proper pics out of it. I PERSONALLY wouldnt look at changing to another printer...... just get this setup checked out first.

I personally gave up on inkjets for home use a few months back. Fed up of high running costs and drying up cartridges etc. I took the plunge and blew my wallet on a colour laser. Works each time every time and is as fast as fook!

Porkster, have you aligned the print heads et - should be an option in the Epson dialogue box. Also be aware than most pics on the internet have been optimised for screen which on a PC is 72dpi - compare that the resolution of your printer and that too will lead to bad results.

My last three printers have been Epson Photo printers and the quality I get is as good as a normal print, but works out considerably more expensive.

Also, as well as paper quality, ink quality is vital - those refill kits and cartridges (non genuine) in my experience give really crap results.

If you want, email me a couple of the pics you've tried to print and I'll tell you if it's the image itself that's poor quality or not.

I have an r200 epson which gives excellent results. Porkie make sure that, if its digital camera pics your printing go into the advanced menu and select digital camera correction. This helps it produce the colour more accurately.

Also kodak paper is not very good for epson printers. Your epson uses an oil based ink. Most kodak paper, especially the special offer stuff is designed for printers that use water based inks, ie lexmark and hp.

If you want the best quality inkjet get the r800 or r1800(american import for this one) or you may need to go to a colour laser, ie one about £1500-£2000 to get really good results.

Thanks Bill, but I took the shots especially to see how good they came out. Got another stupid question how come my camera is a 5.1meg but the shots only seem to be 2meg when I look at the file size? Sorry if this is a DUMB question.

The pics aren't that bad. Just not as great as I had hoped for! I will get that Canon one

Porkie I have an Epson R series (R300 ETC Models) and have found it to be faultless. I use Fuji paper 'Premium inkjet paper' which is glossy....
To be honest the images I've printed I haven't had better from boots or jessops.....
Ive framed them as they are faultless....

Look at the camera settings (may need the user manual) and set it up for maximum quality/highest resolution, then you can print good sharp images even on A4 size

Lee - 5.1MEGa pixels is to do with the CCD sensor in the camera that 'sees' and records the image, not quite the same as 5.1MB (storage file size) A digital camera pic that is 2MB is a BIG file, and should really come out very well when printed as long as all the print settings/paper/ink are all as they should be. The same pic would reduce down to approx 300kb for screen use with NO visual loss of clarity.

Basically, the camera can utilise 5.1million pixels e.g.

3000 pixels X 2000 pixels = 6,000,000 pixels = 6MEGA PIXEL camera

You then have resolution e.g. no. of dots per inch (dpi) 72dpi will show up clear on a screen, but ideally you want something like 300+dpi when printing - the more dots per inch, the higher the resolution and thus quality.

HTH

Bill

Porkie if its not set at its highest rate then your camera may not be a real 5.1 million pixel camera, fuji are notorius for this. There cameras offer say 5.1 millon pixels optimised res but the camera only see`s a real 3.1 million pixels. The other 2 million is the camera`s software guessing where to place them.

STEP AWAY FROM THE MODERN TECHNOLOGY YOU INEPT MUPPET!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

And if your taking pictures of your knob, you're gonna need more than 5.1 mega pixels and one hell of a zoom lense to see it clearly!!
