Default ST170 or 2.0 Silvertop???

Hi Guys,

Dont want to start an argument, just want constructive comments. I have a '98 GTi, which is currently running an 2.0 Silvertop, it is still running the 1.8 management as I was looking to go megasquirt or the like in future. I was going to turbo it but have decided to save for a cossie instead, this does however leave me with a small dilemma as I have a trip to the ring planned in september, so I was thinking of track readying mine to use in september.

The issue I have is, do I stick to tuning the engine I already have (for which I also have the H/O Inlet manifold already) which might see 160, or buy a Focus ST170 engine/box/inlet/ecu/loom off of ebay for 600 notes and swap it over, also if I take this route, how much work will be needed to the mounts?

Cheers, Kieren

If you go st then engine should fit on gti mounts but you would need to fab/adapt the st gearbox mount i think shouldnt be too hard however, for £600 you could get management and throttle bodies for silver top

And you said your already on 160bhp an st170 straight off the production line was 170bhp
So is it really worth paying £600 for an extra 10bhp when you could even turbo yours for that money

ST170 motor doesn't actually make the claimed 170, most are a bit down and I can promise that the ST170 motor does not go straight in as my brother did this very conversion on his girlfriends GTi. It was a bit of a cunt to sort, more so as we retained the airconditioning.

I would honestly retain the silvertop as it's been done so many times the info is readily available to do it.
