hello all, could anyone tell me if a rs2000 16v engine can be fitted to a standard 3dr sierra shell without too many mods. what gearbox would i need to run rwd bearing in mind the tunnel is not the same as later models and is there much modification to engine mounts, coolant hoses etc. a few people on my rebuild thread suggested using this engine but realy don't want to buy it and have it sat in workshop because there is too much work to make it fit. the complete car is available to me incl' wiring loom and ecu (chipped) etc. also what would a good condition engine be worth, it is powder coated / painted to a good standard and runs very well.

I4 engines in good working order dont fetch much as I have seen them go for £100 to £300 with gearbox

I'd go for the scorpio version of the engine, or even the 2.3 as they're already suited to rwd. as for the gearbox, i'd imagine an mt75 would fit from a sierra 2.0 or a manual scorpio.

if you don't mind doing some work and mods why don't you fit a 2 litre 16v vauxhall red top
with a set of throttle bodies and a 4 2 1 manifold beats any of the ford engines that are out there today

buy yourself a 2.3 scorpio estate and swap it all over job done

I had this conversion done on my old Sierra Sapphire.

It all went in ok, but you will across some issues, chiefly the exhaust manifold and the inlet manifold.

The 2.3 Scorpio engine has a bit less power than the 2.0 RS2000 engine, but the manifolds will be correct. I recall back in the day people fitted the 2.3 bottom end and used the rs2000 cylinder head on the rs2000's. If memory serves then I think the 2.3 engine is a taller engine, which is why the Escort guys didnt use the full engine, perhaps it was the head that was taller.

Re the gearbox, a standard RWD MT75 from a 2.0 twin cam Sierra will bolt straight up to it.

Though, this begs the question, and its a question I've asked myself lately, even though I had the conversion done in 1999, why bother? If you want to go N/A, get a 2.9 24v unit from a scorpio. 200bhp out of the bag. I wish id of done that instead.

thanks for reply's. the reason for looking at these engines was originally i wanted to go 4 wheel drive so bought a complete xr4x4 2.9i as donor. most comments were not to go 4x4 as extra weight and without 4x4 power / weight ratio would be more than compensated by 2.0l dohc. i went and bought a sierra 2.0 gt for donor. most comments were then should have gone for 16v twin cam, which is a lot lighter but same power as 2.9 v6 which is where i am now. the car is for my son to use as road rally car. if the engine gets damaged it is easily replaced and cheap. the 2.3 engines and boa / bob are not quite as easily obtainable or cheap.

i think the 2.0 8v bottom end is the same as the 2.0 16v as well, except I think the 16v has valve cut outs in the pistons and an oil spray bar. I could be wrong as its been some 13 years since I had this conversion done.

The inlet manifold and the exhaust manifold from the 8v will NOT fit the 16v though. The 8v uses siamese ports on the head and the 16v uses individual ports.

The box that is, early shells had a fixed position for the type 9 mount, later shells have the sliding type point for the mount to accommodate different gearbox options / combinations.

cheers. had a look at both tunnels tonight and standard has fixed as you say for type 9. genuine shell has sliding so not a problem. i could unpick welding on tunnel and replace with later one as i have one available already.
is there any such thing as an easy project??? seems like the decision on what to fit will take longer than the build.

what you need is the type 9 5spd box, bolts straight on if you have the rs2k lump with clutch, youll need a spigot bearing b4 you do that, there all the same size.

dohc 8v engine mounts, sump and pick up pipe,
ive fitted the rs2k lump in a fiesta both fwd and rwd and now currently installing it in a triumph toledo, and if you wanna run it on carbs with a cheap ignition, go 4 the esc 2 pack
