hiya peeps unfortunatly i dont have a garage and for 5 years now ive have to keep my escort cosworth outside in all extreame type weather (see pictures) and the paintwork has been just fine

3 months ago i bought an all singing all dancing outdoor cover for it, and all seemed to be going well with the car looking mint underneith each time i took the cover off

well today i take the cover off only to find a shit load of blisters in my paintwork on the bonnet thankfully its no where else,, erm YET

has anyone else had similar trouble with their paint underneith a car cover or can anyone explain what has happened and the cause of my blistering paint

thanks for the reply bud but if it was rubbing it would have took the laquer off
this is tiny bubbles coming from underneith the paint

i will post pictures tommorow of my grim findings

Poor or no filters/water trap in paint shop,was bonnet painted in your ownership....

i saw this with a mates mercury RST,
it was stood for 3 weeks with the cover on while we sourced a gearbox, it blistered the bonnet/wing tops and took the paint off down to the primer on the mirrors, althugh yours wont as it has the mirror ear cutout jobbies

was it mega windy just before it blistered?

the RST was on a farm in the open and was like a wind tunnel

just saying what happened with this experience, not saying thats what happened with yours

edit, also went to primer on the corner of the wings above indicators

yes lads the bonnet was painted about 7 years back, it was a proper job too done at the vauxhall garage in ormskirk

its weird as in the piccys its been out in minus temps with all the ice and snow,
i thought the cover would insulate the car as well as keep it dry and clean

it does sit in a windy place and the cover always feels dry underneith,i only check it on a good day though,so the cover could even be wet 90% of the time and just dryed out in the wind when ive checked it

water in the paint does sound about right just now but look at the snow and ice on it beforehand,,the paint stayed good then,, its a weird one alright

From reading other posts on car covers they do seem to cause more problems than they actually prevent.

I don't care what any one says! I paid 180 pounds for a top spec breathable lined cover! And all it is'is a moisture trap!!! Even it's bone dry outside the car was wet as fuck under the cover! I'd much rather have the car un covered!

your far better leaving them uncovered outside in my experience and dont park them on grass if possible as the floor will rot in no time

The only way to cover a car an stop that is a car-coon they do an outside one that is good , my one is getting in a bit now but it is at least a 12 years old! the newer ones are even better now, they don't rub and they actually dry the car out! rather than act a a water trap if the car is outside! I've used outdoor covers for years with no problems. Currently have a specialised covers storm shield and it's fantastic. It was something like Ł300 though, maybe a bit more.

My first S1 was fine in all weathers, one winter with a cover over it and rot started to sprout up everywhere so stopped using it, seemed to hold moisture around the car.

My mate also had a minty S2, sat outside for months, then he stuck a cover on it, well fastened down, but the wind moved it around and took the paint off the edges on the car!!

I dare say there are some better quality covers out there, but personally i think keep it waxed and started regularly and they will be better off.

my sons car blistered where the cover froze onto paintwork, best advice has been given above

it's because the moisture can't escape therefore it's permanently wet. it would be like us wearing a bin bag in a sauna when the sun rises and hits your panels which is heating the moisture which in turn tries to evaporate but has nowhere to go. i dont want to use a cover on my escort because of this but i have to because my boot leaks

This is why you have to buy decent covers. The specialised covers one is breathable. If my car is wet when I put it on, it'll still dry out with the cover on. It's made of material like you'd find on outdoor clothing.

The wind actually helps when you cover a car outside as it moves the air around and stops it staying damp. My Saph was cover for years outside using only cheap Ł60 covers and it was alright. The only problem I had was the paint rubbed through on the mirrors after 3 years but the rest was fine.

hi lads mines from a company in skemelsdale called performance car covers
it cost me Ł260 as its tripple layer and taylor made for the escort cos

heres some pictures of the dammage sorry about the quality as its my iphone

im gonna have a look with the heat gun tomorrow though some of the blisters have got so big, its looking like a respray is on the cards now

might just be the pics but the paint job looks not that good,the orange peel is quite bad and not something youd expect from a high end paintshop.its something youd expect coming off ford production line but as youve said its been painted before then id expect a better quality job,might just be the pics though

i could live with a bit of orange peel here and there but not with the blisters,,gutted

I have seen blisters like that on cars that have been painted with no clear coat and using a cover outside.

Does the car colour transfer on to a cloth when you polish it?

It's water trapped in either filler or before primer
The cover drawes the water out I never heard or seen some one
Use a heat gun as the water is under the base an clear
Only way forward is to bear metal bonnet
An repaint . Also worth noting not to cover fresh

your not the only one,i have just bought a rs turbo,and this was under a breathable sheet for months on end,& the bonnet has bubbled,so it will need the bonnet respraying

deffo no colour transfer on my cloths matey, ive just been on the phone to the lad i bought it off and he's telling me the only panel thats not had paint whist he owned it is the roof, and he had the work done in sections

to say im shocked is an understatement,, only paint i thought it had was the drivers rear quarter as its a bit dull in the sunshine and the bonnet which ive mentioned

he also informed me its had a new drivers door from ford as the old one had rusted

im just stunned and wondering what to do with this cover now if its going to be a yey or ney

one things for sure if your cars had any paintwork done a car cover isnt really for you

eye its just funny how its showed up now after all those years of rain,, frost and even snow,

im 100% conviced its been brought out by this car cover for sure

the bonnet wil get a re spray and i guess i'l just have to loose the cover

I had a Classic additions one on my car for years with no issues Paul. Only reason I changed is a cat decided to pluck it to bits one day

The specialised covers item is far better IMO though.

My car was painted 4 months ago and I have the same blisters on the wing and doors after putting a cover on it. Their getting worst too. I'm totally gutted as it cost me loads to paint and the guy done a good job! Iv removed cover now and it has to be repainted, but lost interest now.
Car has been left out for years prior to paint job without any problems.

Surely these blistering problems are a problem with the paint? There must be moisture of sometimes under the paint for a blister to form?

Like I said above it's just those who have had theres painted, Even without the cover I am sure it would of poked it's head up sooner or later! IMO!

That happened to my white saf after I covered it all the top edges where the cover had been touching tottaly devastated was like the meseales took it back to coach works that pinted it and they put it bk in oven and 99% of the blisters went away. But a wasn't happy so a got car repainted and didn't leave it covered for any period of time again.

That blistering is called microblistering very common when covering a car up with a poor paint job if you never covered it it probsbly would never have happened my 3 door stood 8 years rotting with no paint issues I bought it covered it over and within 6 months the whole car microblisterd, painter said it was a layer of paint under the that had caused it full paint required!
