Default Antifreeze question?

How much antifreeze does a 2wd cosworth take? And does it have to be blue?

Half and half, not sure on exact quantity, I was also told blue is best for the cossy, as the red is for modern cars and very corrosive to the YB cylinder head.

The coolant capacity is around 7.5litres iirc.
So of that 50/50 mix.
Doesnt have to be blue but if your just topping up then it has to be compatable- some of the newer stuf does mix with older.

ie blue dont mix with red

You simply can't judge by the colour!

Antifreeze is a whole subject in itself, blue is typically IAT, this does not contain 'silicate' as these are known to break seals used in older engines, the disadvantage is this only has a 2 year life, as a guide line this is for cars manufactured circa pre 1998.

OAT is newer antifreeze, it contains 'silicate' and is typically pink in colour, the benefit of this is it lasts longer, say 5 years, it has nothing to do with being an alloy head, most "modern" cars have alloy heads, or indeed complete alloy engines!

As said though, re mixing and the mixture.

I personally use OAT anti freeze, the majority do as well I should think, in this era of car, older cars it can break seals.

I have explained the differences between the two above.

There are 3 different types of antifreeze

You should first find out if you can use the oat stuff or not

There is a really good write up in this months ppc about this topic which covers all the groud that Martin has described and should answer some of your questions

But don't go on just the colour
